On October 14, Mabel-Canton head volleyball coach Lonnie Morken was inducted into the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Morken is only the fifth volleyball coach to receive such distinction. He is pictured alongside some of his current players and coaches. Morken is already a member of the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2011). He is a 14-time Section 1A Coach of the Year and one time Class A Coach of the Year award winner. In his 30th year as head volleyball coach for the Cougars, Morken is one of only four volleyball coaches ever to amass of 800 wins in Minnesota. Other notable area coaches to make the Coaches Association Hall of Fame are Jerry Eckstein (Plainview), Verne Herman (Plainview), John Nett (Winona Cotter), Jerry Bernatz (Chatfield), Jim Flim (Winona), Jim Reinhardt (Rushford-Peterson), and Ken VanDenBoom (Caledonia). It is the kind of honor where things (fields, gymnasiums, athletic meets) are later named after you.
