Lions sink Southland in volleyball opener

September 2, 2022 by Lee Epps

SG 3, Southland 0

25-16, 25-12, 25-11

Spring Grove assumed control during the latter part of the first set and then dominated the remainder of the 2022 season-opening volleyball match at Southland on Aug. 25. The second set began with the Lions scoring with 11 kills on their first 12 attacks. The Grove girls then scored the first seven points of set three. Overall, Spring Grove posted three times as many kills (33) as hitting errors (11) with a strong 33% hitting efficiency.

Kendal VanMinsel piloted the Lion attack with 23 set assists and 5 kills. Kenadee Gerard had 9 kills and contributed to 3 scoring blocks. Addyson McHugh added 8 kills and helped with 2 blocks. Maggie Lile served 7 aces and Kylie Reynolds 2. Lydia Solum scored with 3 kills, 1 block assist and 1 ace while serving 16 for 16. Joelle Halverson scored 3 kills on only 8 attacks

The Rebels attacked most successfully early and trailed the first set only 14-12 before the Lions scored 11 of the next 15 points (25-16). Southland would end the evening with more attacking errors (17) than kills (15).

There was no relief for the home team at the service line where the Rebs had no aces while giving away seven points with service errors. It was also a blocking shutout with six Lions contributing to five scoring blocks. Southland did not score with either a block or a serve. Well over half of the Rebels’ 39 total points came with 24 Lion errors. Southland never enjoyed a lead in any set.

The B-team Lions also won in straight sets, 2-0 (25-13 and 25-18). The C-team (freshman) dropped the opener, 1-2 (21-25, 25-14, 12-15). The C-team avenged that setback at a Saturday tournament at Lanesboro, where they swept all nine sets against Southland, Caledonia and Fillmore Central.
