SG 48, @ Lyle/Pacelli 20
Spring Grove improved to 2-0 with a convincing 48-20 road win over Lyle/Pacelli on a rainy, storm-interrupted night at Lyle on Sept. 9. It was 48-6 before the Athletics tacked on two late touchdowns. It was the 12th straight loss for L/P over the last three seasons. Spring Grove has won the last 15 games versus the Athletics.

However, the Athletics appeared up to the challenge when they scored on their second possession to trail 14-6. That was the first touchdown given up by the Lion starting defense this season. But L/P would manage only two more first downs before the Spring Grove starters retired. The Athletics lost three fumbles, two recovered by Jacob Olerud. Caleb Griffin and Emmet Engeldinger were the tackle leaders, each with nine stops.
The Lions scored on their first four possessions on the way to a 35-6 halftime lead. Quarterback Elijah Solum rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns (17 and 7-yard runs) while passing for 132 yards and two more touchdowns. He completed 11 of 17 passes to four different receivers with no interceptions. After two games, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound junior leads the sub-district in total offense (rushing plus passing yardage) with 302 yards on the ground and 304 yards in the air.
An early 43-yard reception by Tysen Grinde set up his 20-yard TD grab on the game’s first possession. Caleb Griffin caught a 16-yard TD toss shortly before halftime and kicked 6 of 7 extra points.
Senior running back Hunter Holland had a big night, rushing for 145 yards, including two and three-yard TD carries. Sophomore Zach Brumm scored the last Lion TD on a three-yard plunge. Spring Grove averaged 9.5 yards per snap with blocking up front from Ty Cleven, Emmet Engeldinger, Cooper Olson, Ethan Crouch, Brandon Jahnke and Logan Brumm.
The Lion B-team, after a 54-0 previous-week win at Mabel-Canton, dropped a hard-fought 14-6 home game against Kingsland. The junior high boys had dropped their opener 26-6 at LeRoy-Ostrander before falling at home to Kingsland, 40-14.
