Lions Get Back to Winning, Down Knights

November 9, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - High School Football

Visiting Spring Grove did almost all the damage in the first half before each team scored once after the break.  SG drove 67 and 75 yards with their first two possessions to lead 14-0. After reaching the Kingsland 3-yard line, a bad snap on first down scuttled the next opportunity. But after an ensuing 87-yard drive, it was 21-0 after four possessions on the way to a 27-0 halftime bulge. The Lions displayed balance with 205 yards rushing and 192 in the air. The Knights had little offensive success converting only 1 of 13 third downs and being stopped four times on fourth down. Of Kingsland’s 117 yards, 81 came with reserves from both squads playing late. With KHS down 34-0, Beau Wiersma ran 39 yards to set up a 19-yard TD run by Kale Mensink, who then passed to Ayden Howard for the 2-point conversion (34-8). For SG, Hunter Holland scored on two of his five carries with 26 and 8-yard runs. Mitchell Reynolds led all rushers with 85 yards, including a 1-yard TD run. Isaac Griffin scored on a 1-yard run, threw a 1-yard TD pass to Caden Grinde and kicked four extra points. Griffin, after 81 passes, threw his first interception of the year. Griffin (15-26-2) was intercepted twice but returned the favor by picking off a pair of Kingsland passes. Each team had three turnovers.  SG improved to 2-2.  The Knights drop to 1-3.
