The Spring Grove volleyball girls (4-0, 4-0 SEC) remained unbeaten and not seriously challenged through their first four matches, the latest a 3-0 home sweep of Glenville-Emmons (25-17, 25-13, 25-9. The Lions were back in action on Sept. 16 after two matches had been postponed by pandemic protocols. After the Grove girls had dismissed their first three winless foes, G-E (3-7, 2-4 SEC) was the first Lion opponent thus far with a win on its record.

Despite being shorthanded, the Lions never trailed during the first and third sets, while the Wolverines led only briefly at the start of set two.

The Lion offense was fueled by the always excellent passing from All-SEC Maggie Lile and 23 set assists from Rachel Normann. Lile led defenders with 8 digs and assisted on two kills while scoring herself with a kill and a service ace.

Kenadee Gerard scored with a match-high 15 kills. Katelyn Kraus had a team-best 50% efficiency with 4 kills on only 8 attacks with no errors. Brielle Neeley attacked only 6 times with 3 kills along with 2 scoring blocks. Lydia Solum added 3 kills to go with a block and 3 ace serves.

Spring Grove served only 84% (12 misfires), but still scored with 18 aces with eight Lions

credited with aces. Kraus served 8 instant winners with 3 each from Normann and Solum along with 2 apiece from Sydney Holland and Gerard.

The Lions had nearly twice as many scoring plays (50) as errors. But their 27 miscues accounted for most of the Wolverines’ 39 points. The visitors scored only 12 points on their own play. The Wolverines had twice as many hitting errors (16) as kills (8) and more errant serves (6) than aces (4).

The B-team, also undefeated at 4-0,  swept both sets in the preliminary match. G-E has no freshman team.
