Lion netters pass big test against Burros

September 16, 2022 by Lee Epps

Spring Grove improved to 4-0 while passing its first competitive volleyball test with a 3-0 road win at Lanesboro (25-20, 25-9, 25-22) on Sept. 8. The state-ranked No. 9 Lions racked up 15 more kills and 10 more service aces than did the home team, while the Burros’ only statistical edge came in scoring blocks, 4 to 2. Superior passing led to 108 attacks for the Lions, compared to 80 for Lanesboro.

The Burros enjoyed early leads in sets one and three, but they had too many errors to stay with Spring Grove in the second set. The Lions scored eight of the final nine points to finish the match and avoid a fourth set.

For the Lions, Addyson McHugh was the most efficient hitter with 12 kills and two misfires. She and Kenadee Gerard each served four aces, and McHugh also shared the defensive digs lead with Maggie Lile, each with a dozen saves. Near the net, Joelle Halverson scored with seven kills and a block while Kendal VanMinsel supplied 23 set assists. Six different Lions served aces, including a pair each from Sydney Holland and VanMinsel.

In set one, Spring Grove trailed most of the way until McHugh served four consecutive aces to put the Lions up by three, 19-16. A subsequent block and two kills by Halverson cemented the five-point margin and ultimate win, 25-20.

In set two, Spring Grove scored the first five points and was never challenged on the way to a 25-9 decision. It was the only set in which the Burros had more errors (13) than winning plays (5).

In set three, Lanesboro played better and was again highly competitive. The Burros led 21-17 before the Lions rallied to tie after two aces served by Sydney Holland and a kill from McHugh. A service error gave the lead back to Lanesboro (22-21) before Grove scored the final four points with two kills from McHugh and two match-clinching aces served by VanMinsel. SG won, 25-22.

Spring Grove took the B-team match 2-0 (25-11, 25-16) as did the C-team/freshmen (25-18, 25-20).
