Lion girls’ winning streak versus L-O ends at 25

March 1, 2021 by Lee Epps

Spring Grove freshman center Katelyn Kraus posted career highs with 18 points and 5 steals while matching another personal-best 12 rebounds, but it was not enough as the visiting Lion girls lost a game they once led by 12 points. With the 65-47 decision, LeRoy-Ostrander broke a 25-game losing streak against the Lions, who had won 36 of the previous 37 games in the series. Both L-O (4-7, 4-7 SEC) and Spring Grove (2-8, 2-7 SEC) had dropped their previous four games this season.

For most of the night, the score was much closer than the final count would indicate. After scoring the game’s first two points, the Cardinals did not lead again (33-32) until six minutes after halftime. The Cards led by only three points (46-43) with slightly more than five minutes to play. But L-O then raced away with a 17-to-2 run.

The game was decided in transition with the Cards amazingly scoring 46 of their 65 points with fast breaks – the most transition points by an opponent in the 19 seasons for which the statistic has been kept. L-O scored a whopping 57 points in the lane. The Lion full-court defense did force 11 turnovers, but produced only six fast break points for Spring Grove. Meanwhile, L-O broke the press for 16 transition points. Fast break layups helped the Cards shoot 43% from the field, while the Lions languished at 23%. Layups eliminated the need for 3-point shots; LeRoy-Ostrander attempted only five treys (2 for 5). Beyond the 3-point arc, SG hit only 2 of 21.

Lion guard Jordian Leahy also scored in double figures with 16 points, and Addyson McHugh added 7 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocked shots. Eighth grade point guard Emerson Ingvalson collected a career-high 8 rebounds.

Playing without one usual starter, four Cardinals scored in double figures, including 22 points from sophomore Jordan Runde and double doubles from both eighth grader Benita Nolt (16 points, 11 rebounds) and junior point guard Gracie O’Byrne (10 points, 11 boards). Six-foot senior center Kelly Hanson was close with 13 points and 8 rebounds.

The Lions clung to a 30-27 halftime with half of their first-half points coming from the foul line while hitting 15 of 23 free throws. But with only two charity tosses in the second half, SG added only 17 more points. The Lions finished with 15 free throws and 15 baskets.

The pace was rapid with the teams combining for 130 shots and 61 turnovers (SG 30, L-O 31), but the clock stopped often with 33 fouls resulting in 44 free throws.

There was no B-team game, but the Lion eighth grade team (3-1) won 29-16. The Spring Grove seventh graders (2-3) made it a junior high sweep, 28-18.
