Lion girls rally with defense to overtake Cardinals, 66-52

February 23, 2023 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove girls won 66-52, rallying from a 15-point deficit to win by 14 at LeRoy-Ostrander on Feb. 13. The Cardinals hit 6 of 7 early shots and 6 of 7 free throws to take a 19-4 lead before the Lions changed defenses. Full-court pressure led to a season-high 19 steals for Spring Grove, which contributed to 33 Cardinal turnovers. the most of any Lion opponent this season. The Grove girls thus completed a season sweep, having triumphed at home, 55-27, two weeks prior. The Lions lead the all-time series, 62 to 12, after winning 40 of the last 41 games versus LeRoy-Ostrander.

Addyson McHugh, shown here scoring versus Houston, opened the week with a 24-point, 11-rebound double-double during Spring Grove’s 66-52 road win at LeRoy-Ostrander.

Lion senior Addyson McHugh had a 24-point, 11-rebound double-double while freshman Siri Konkel hit 8 of 8 free throws on the way to 16 points in addition to 8 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Eighth grader Brinley Middendorf added 10 points and 7 boards. For the Cardinals (5-18, 3-13 SEC), Benita Nolt had a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

Spring Grove (11-13, 9-7 SEC) got back within one point (26-25) before trailing by five points at halftime, 30-25. The Lions then opened the second stanza with an 11-to-2 run for a 36-31 lead. SG would lead by as many as 18 points before the Cards would make tins interesting again at 61-50. But the Lions prevailed by hitting 5 of 6 late free throws while forcing three successive Redbird turnovers on the other end.

Whistles sounded for a total of 41 fouls, including 23 on L-O – the most of any Lion opponent this year. Both teams took advantage of many trips to the foul line where SG hit 21 of 31 free throws (68%) and LeRoy-Ostrander 19 of 26 (73%). Each squad netted five field goals from 3-point land, where L-O shot well but not very often (5 for 11, 45%) and SG shot more often but not that well (5 for 19, 26%).

The Cards had four more total rebounds (34-30), but the Lions had four more offensive boards (14-10), which led to Spring Grove’s 23-to-13 margin in second-chance points

L-O has no B-team this year and SG no eighth grade team. The Cardinals won the seventh grade game.
