The Spring Grove girls won by 12 points after trailing by 11 points in the second half in the 57-45 home decision against Mabel-Canton on Jan. 12. Lion sophomore Kendal VanMinsel had an 11-point, 13-rebound double-double while Addyson McHugh scored a season-high 18 points. Emerson Ingvalson and Kylie Hammel were close to double digits with 9 and 8 points, respectively. Freshman Kinley Soiney led the Cougars with a game-high 22 points and completed the double-double with 11 rebounds.

The Lions’ superior ball-handling overcame the Cougars’ hot shooting. Mabel-Canton outshot the Lions, 45% to 32%, but Spring Grove shot much more often due to 15 fewer turnovers and 16 more offensive rebounds. The Lions’ 17 steals contributed to 26 Cougar turnovers. The Lions, as a team, had more assists (13) than turnovers (11). Those 11 lost possessions were acceptable, especially considering the up-and-down-the-court pace of the contest. Freshman point guard Siri Konkel directed the attack with a positive 5-to-3 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Spring Grove (6-6, 4-4 SEC) scored the first five points of the game, but midway through the first half, hot-shooting Mabel-Canton (1-9, 1-6 SEC) used a 12-point run to take a 10-point lead (22-12). The Cougars led 31-22 at halftime and then opened the second half with a fast break to enjoy their greatest lead of 11 points.
The Lions would later answer and take the lead with a stunning 23-2 run, scoring on 10 of 15 possessions, including five 3-point field goals. Meanwhile, Mabel-Canton went through 14 possessions with only two free throws added to the scorebook. After netting 31 points before halftime, the Cougars managed only 14 points in the second stanza.
Neither team took advantage of charity chances with the Lions hitting only 4 of 16 free throws and the Cougars only 4 of 11. Both teams shot better from the field than from the foul line. Both shot well from the perimeter, including 3-pointers (SG 7 of 21, 33% and M-C 5 for 11, 45%). But Spring Grove earned a 32-to-17-point advantage in the lane and an 18-to-6 advantage with second-chance points.
After playing 111 games, all-time, Mabel-Canton has won 56 and Spring Grove 55. Last season, the teams split their two-games.
Mabel-Canton does not have a B-team this year, and Spring Grove does not have an eighth grade team. The Cougars won the seventh grade game, 25-12.
