The Spring Grove girls won two of three games last week, all of which at home and all decided before halftime. Fillmore Central lashed the Lions, 78-36, on Feb. 8 before the Grove girls claimed a 68-38 thrashing of Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons on Feb. 10, one night before completing a season sweep of LeRoy-Ostrander, 60-42. The latter was a conference contest after Spring Grove had previously defeated the Cardinals (58-33) in a non-conference matchup. A decisive scoring run had come during the second half of that January game at LeRoy, but the Lions put the rematch away with big run before halftime.
Addyson McHugh poured in a career-high 27 points against AC/GE while Katelyn Kraus grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds and Lydia Solum passed out a career-best 8 assists while scoring a career-high 13 points versus L-O.
Of the four teams, only Fillmore Central (44%) shot well from 3-point land. However, the Lions were effective from the foul line, hitting 29 of 40 free throws (73%) last week. The three opponents combined to hit only 20 of 49 charity shots (41%). Spring Grove outrebounded both the Knights and the Cardinals, winning the rebound battle for only the second and third times this season.
All four teams finished the week below .500 with Spring Grove at 8-16 (6-6 SEC East), still in third place in the East Division, heading into the final week of the regular season. Fillmore Central left town at 9-13 while AC/GE dropped to 6-16 and LeRoy-Ostrander at 3-19 (2-9 SEC West)
With this, their most decisive win in the series, the Falcons have won 8 of the last 10 versus the Lions, but Spring Grove still leads all-time, 20 wins to 18. It was the first-ever game against the shared AC/GE program, but the Lions had won all 30 games against Glenville-Emmons. The Grove girls have taken 38 of the last 40 versus LeRoy-Ostrander.
The B-team Lions (10-11) could not hold onto a halftime lead and were outscored by nine points at the free throw line in a five-point loss, 33-28, against Fillmore Central, But the B-girls defeated AC/GE 38-26 and completed a season sweep of LeRoy-Ostrander, 41-18. The eighth graders dropped a 24-15 decision against the Falcons, while the Lion seventh graders improved to 10-2 with a 26-10 win versus Fillmore Central and a 43-7 victory against L-O.
SG 36, Fillmore Central 78
Fillmore Central did not look like a team with a losing record. The Falcons had a 34-to-25 rebound advantage and fewer than half as many turnovers, 11 to 23. Fillmore converted steals and rebounds into 26 fast-break points, helping them shoot 50% from 2-point range and also shot a strong 44% from 3-point land. Both squads launched 16 trey attempts; Fillmore sank seven and Spring Grove four.
The Lions hit 3 of 4 early triple attempts to stay close at 13-11, but the visitors soon surged away with a 12-to-2 run. FC efficiently scored on 15 of 18 possessions on the way to a 45-24 halftime lead and then scored 25 of the first 30 points after intermission.
Addyson McHugh led Lion scoring with 12 points; Kraus contributed 9 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore Kammry Broadwater fueled the Falcon offense with a rare 12-point, 12-assist double-double. Junior Madison Simon had a game-high 17 points while senior Lauren Mensink added 16 points and sophomore Jersey Ristau 12.
SG 68, Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons 38
The Knights struggled out of the gate, committing seven turnovers during their first 10 possessions against Spring Grove’s pressure defense. The Lions converted those seven steals into eight transition points while jumping out to a 14-0 lead. It was 40-20 at halftime
It was a fast-paced game with the Lions outscoring the visitors, 18-12, in fast breaks. Spring Grove did not shoot well from 3-point range (4 for 23, 17%) but still scored with a season-high 28 field goals while airing up a season-high 77 official shots (when not fouled). The teams combined for 17 blocked shots and 79 rebounds, greatly due to the Knights showing little patience on offense, especially early. Despite shooting quickly, AC/GE also committed 31 turnovers, 24 of which were Spring Grove steals.
In addition to McHugh’s 27 points, Jordian Leahy tallied 18 and Emerson Ingvalson 9. Eleven Lions were credited with rebounds, including 8 by Solum, as Grove won the backboard battle, 42 rebounds to 37.
SG 60, LeRoy-Ostrander 42
In the final home game, Kraus had a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double; Leahy was close with 15 points and 9 boards as was Solum with 13 points and another 9 rebounds plus a career-high 8 assists. Ingvalson and McHugh each added 8 points. For L-O, Jordan Runde had 14 points while Maria Nolt had a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double. Sam Volkart put in 8 points while matching Kraus’ 13 boards.
Much of the game was played on even terms. It was a 19-19 tie before the Grove girls closed the first half with a 20-to-5 run, accounting for 15 of the eventual 18-point winning margin. Post-entry passes, offensive rebounds and fast breaks fueled that game-deciding surge. Down by 15 at halftime (39-24), the Cardinals got no closer than 12 points in the second stanza.
Like their first game back in January, both teams were ineffective with 3-point shots. In this rematch, the Lions shot a season-worst 7% with 3-point attempts, hitting only 1 of 15 from deep. But they did not really need perimeter production while outscoring the Cardinals in the lane, 45-20. Grove, with 20 offensive rebounds, scored 20 second-chance points.
