The Spring Grove girls played from behind almost all game in a 53-40 road loss at Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons on Feb. 2. It was a non-conference contest, since SEC member Glenville-Emmons plays in the Valley Conference when sharing girls basketball. The Knights improved to 9-8 while the Lions dropped to 8-12.
A string of seven consecutive Lion turnovers occurred while the Knights scored seven unanswered points for a 10-point lead (20-10). Spring Grove was back within four at halftime, 27-23, but could not survive two more AC/GE runs after intermission. The Lions closed the gap to two (29-27) before the Knights ran off the next nine points (38-27).
An Emerson Ingvalson steal and transition basket capped a six-point SG run to cut the deficit back five (38-33). But the home team scored the next eight points to make it 46-33 with six minutes remaining. Both teams then added seven points before the final buzzer.
Ingvalson and Lydia Solum each scored 12 points, and Addyson McHugh tallied 10. Solum and Kylie Hammel each came down with 8 rebounds as the Lions won the backboard battle, 34-27. Hammel matched a trio of career highs with those 8 boards, 4 assists and 6 steals.
Spring Grove lost the turnover battle, 24-19, and with twice as many fouls (16-8), were outscored by five points at the free throw line. The Lions shot well at the charity stripe (67%) but did not earn many free throws (4 for 6). They shot a weak 28% from field, while the home team had 39% success, including a good 33% from 3-point land (6 for 18). AC/GE freshman forward Macy Mattson scored a game-high 21 points.
Spring Grove now has a 1-1 record against the shared program after winning all 30 games against Glenville-Emmons. The Knights do not have a B-team this year.
