Lion girls fade late in loss at St. Charles

February 2, 2023 by Lee Epps

Spring Grove Lions Girls Basketball

The St. Charles girls closed with a 13-to-2 run to defeat visiting Spring Grove, 64-53, on Jan. 24. The Lions pulled even with a 3-point basket by sophomore Emerson Ingvalson, but they would add only two free throws during the final five minutes, 20 seconds. With this non-conference setback, Class A Spring Grove dropped to 6-10 while the Class AA Saints ended a 10-game losing streak, improving to 5-12.

Makadyn Gust, a 5-foot-8 junior poured in 40 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the Saints. Addyson McHugh led Lion scoring with 17 points with 11 points from Kylie Hammel, 10 from Ingvalson and 8 from Lydia Solum.

The ball was in the air often with St. Charles launching 87 shots during 18 minutes of play. The Saints displayed little patience while airing up 43 shots beyond the 3-point arc, more than six times as many as Spring Grove. Both teams hit five treys, but SG was 5 for 7 (a season-best 71%) and St. Charles 5 for 43 (12%). Percentage-wise, St. Charles shot well only from the free throw line, 73% (11 for 15).

The Lions, with a season-worst 28 turnovers, did not handle the ball well enough to win, but they still had a good chance (tied 51-51) until the final five-minute scoring drought. They shot extremely well (14 for 25, 56%) to lead at halftime, 34-31. However, Lion shooting took a polar plunge in the second half (5 for 29, 17%). Overall, Spring Grove outshot their hosts, 35% to 29%, but the Saints had 30 more official attempts (84 to 54).

St. Charles seized the lead (47-45) halfway through the second half. Spring Grove tied it twice before committing four late turnovers while missing their last seven shots from the field.

The Saints have won all five games played against Spring Grove. The B-team girls played two overtimes before Spring Grove prevailed, 34-31. There was no junior high game at St. Charles but the Lion seventh graders lost a makeup game at Lanesboro, 34-12.
