Lion girls drop decisions versus Indians, Knights, Cougars

February 3, 2022 by Lee Epps

Spring Grove MN Girls Basketball Jordian Leahy

The Spring Grove girls ended the week with a 35-30 loss at Mabel-Canton on Jan. 27 – the lowest scoring game between the two programs in 24 years, since a 26-25 Cougar win in 1997-98. This latest decision made it a season split, each time with the home team prevailing by five points.

While that Lion-Cougar contest was decided late, the first two Spring Grove games of the week saw double-digit margins by halftime. Despite their good shooting, the Lions could not overcome the strong post play and fast-break attack at Waukon in a 71-55 loss in Iowa on Jan. 24. The next night, Kingsland appeared worthy of its commanding position atop the SEC West Division while coasting to a 63-34 win at Spring Grove.

The Lions fell to 5-13 (4-6 SEC East) while Waukon improved to 11-5, Kingsland to 11-7 (7-0 SEC West) and Mabel-Canton to 6-11 (3-6 SEC East). It was a fourth straight loss to Waukon, a school with about four times the enrollment of Spring Grove. The Indians lead that series, 20 wins to 11. It was a seventh consecutive setback against Kingsland in a series the Knights now lead 8 wins to 3. Spring Grove was unable to even the all-time series with Mabel-Canton. After 110 games, the Cougars now have 56 wins and SG 54.

The B-team Lions (7-8) slipped below .500 with a 47-19 loss at Waukon and a closer 24-20 defeat against Kingsland before completing a season sweep of Mabel-Canton, 32-29. The SG seventh graders (7-1) extended their season winning streak to seven against Kingsland, 48-6. There was no eighth grade game.

SG 55, Waukon 71

Jordian Leahy scored a game-high 23 points as Spring Grove matched a season-best 40% shooting from the field, but the Indians shot an extraordinary 67% – the best of any Lion opponent thus far. Waukon shot so well because they often shot so close to the basket with a 51-26 scoring advantage in the lane. The Lions could not prevent the pinpoint passes into the post where 6-foot junior center Emma Palmer put in 21 points during her limited time on the court. Waukon posted 26 assists, the most of any SG opponent this season. The fleet-footed Indians pushed the pace after rebounds and steals to tally 18 fast-break points. The home team did not need perimeter shooting but hit a hot 40% (4 for 10) from 3-point land. A dozen Indians played and 10 scored.

The Lions were outscored by only three points in the second half. But the Indians had taken a 35-22 lead into halftime and then put the game out of reach with the first 11 points of the second half. Spring Grove did not fold and against Waukon reserves, cut a 26-point deficit in half during the fourth quarter. That prompted the Indian starters to reenter the fray.

SG 34, Kingsland 63

The Lions did not shoot nearly as well at home (26%) as they had on the road in Iowa. After a 3-ball by Leahy tied the score at 4-4, the Lions would add only two more baskets in the first half. Kingsland separated with a 20-to-1 run and led 36-10 at halftime.

For Spring Grove, it was much like the night before when the opposition did not need perimeter shooting while scoring 22 transition points as part of the Kingsland’s 49-to-19 scoring advantage in the lane.

Leahy scored 14 points for the Lions, while three Knights scored in double figures in a balanced attack with 20 assists. Anika Reiland had 12 points and a game-high 9 rebounds. Katelyn Hauser had a team-best 13 points and Shelby Beck 11.

SG 30, Mabel-Canton 35

The Lions led by one point at halftime before the Cougars scored the next eight points. Spring Grove pulled even at 22-22 with a Katelyn Kraus rebound basket, but the Lions never caught up again. However, it was only a two-point margin (28-26) with under four minutes to play before Mabel-Canton secured the outcome with a six-point run, five of which scored by Gwen Tollefsrud.

The first half had been filled with offensive frustration with only one basket scored during a stretch of 42 possessions, during which the Lions shot 0 for 15 and the Cougars 1 for 15. The drought began with the score tied at 8-all and saw Mabel-Canton edge ahead 11-8. Then a Leahy steal led to a pair of free throws before she added a post-cut basket to put the Lions ahead 12-11 at intermission.

With six fewer turnovers, SG shot more often, but the Cougars shot better (34%). The Lions were accurate at the free throw line (7 for 10, 70%), but that could not overcome their cold 20% from the field.

Leahy and Kraus each scored 11 points, combining for 22 of the Lions’ 30 points. Kraus completed a double-double with 11 rebounds to keep Spring Grove competitive beneath the glass with 29 boards to 31 for the home team. Cougar eighth grader Kinley Soiney netted three 3-point buckets on the way to a game-high 14 points.
