After opening the season with three road games, the Spring Grove boys enjoyed flogging Glenville-Emmons, 66-27, in the Lions’ home opener on Dec. 21. Jaxon Strinmoen hit 11 of 17 shots on the way to 25 points, one of 10 Lions to score. Twelve of the 13 Grove guys were credited with rebounds and nine with steals. Both teams went 5 for 9 at the free throw line, but that was all for similarity. The Lions improved to 4-0, 3-0 SEC.
In this 18th straight win versus G-E, the Lions scored the game’s first 18 points, passed out 18 assists and had 18 steals, converting those thefts into 15 fast break points. Bryce Berns (4 points) had 4 assists with no turnovers. Ben Udstuen (7 points, 4 rebounds) was the chief thief with 5 steals. Jacob Olerud contributed in all facets with 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.
The Wolverines (2-5, 2-4 SEC) had some quick guards, but with no height or length on the perimeter, had little success even finding 3-point opportunities (2 for 12, 17%). Eight shots were blocked, four rejected by Ethan Crouch. Point production came inside where powerful 6-foot-5 senior center Marshall Baseman scored 17 of the Wolverines’ 27 points and double-doubled with 12 rebounds.
The Lions did not shoot especially well from 3-point land (5 for 20, 25%) but won easily with 43 points in the lane and 46% shooting from the field overall. Spring Grove achieved a triple-up 36-12 halftime margin and led by as many as 42 points before the final whistle.
Glenville-Emmons has a senior and junior dominated lineup but not enough younger players to field a B-team.
