Lion boys wallop Wolverines, 75-27

December 27, 2022 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove boys lifted 26 steals during a runaway 75-27 road win at Glenville-Emmons on Dec. 20. Jaxon Strinmoen was the chief thief with a career-high 8 steals; on offense, he scored 11 points and passed out 3 assists with no turnovers. Tysen Grinde had a game-high 19 points along with team-highs 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 thefts. Elijah Solum tossed in 18 points along with 4 steals, 3 blocked shots and 3 assists with no turnovers.

The Lions (2-0, 2-0 SEC) led only 22-17 until scoring 16 unanswered points on the way to a 38-19, double-up halftime margin. The Wolverines (1-6, 0-5 SEC), unable to handle Spring Grove’s aggressive, long-armed defense were engulfed by a steady stream of turnovers and would end up with 34 lost possessions.

Meanwhile, the Lions handled the ball with only nine turnovers all game and converted steals into 19 fast break points. For the second time in two games, Grove went only 5 for 20 from 3-point range but still outshot the home team from the field, 43% to 30%. The Lions blocked about one out of every four Wolverine shots. And again, the Grove guys made more free throws (12 for 16, 75%) than they allowed the opponent to attempt (5 for 11, 45%).

Statistically, G-E was overwhelmed in every category except rebounding where the Wolverines had a 34-to-30 edge. Junior center Marshall Baseman led the home ream with 10 points and 8 rebounds.

It was the 16th straight win for the Lions in a series they dominate, 32 to 4. The Spring Grove B-team (2-0) also won handily, 53-31. Back east, the Lion eighth graders lost at Caledonia, 37-29, and the seventh graders dropped a 26-23decision to the Warriors.
