Lion boys snap losing streak versus Rushford-Peterson

February 16, 2023 by Lee Epps

spring Grove Boys Basketball

There were too many Spring Grove treys for the Trojans as the Lions boys ended a seven-game losing slide against Rushford-Peterson, 56-45. State-ranked No. 9 Spring Grove drilled 10 of 18 shots, a really hot 55%, beyond the 3-point arc during a non-conference contest in a packed gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 11. Both teams shot really well inside the arc (SG 60%, R-P 65%), but the Trojans could not match Spring Grove’s 3-point success.

Lion senior guard Caleb Griffin hit 7 of 8 shots for 17 points plus 5 steals. Tysen Grinde and Elijah Solum each scored 10 points and rebounded 5 times. The Trojans 6-foot-5 junior guard shared scoring honors with 17 points plus 5 rebounds. Caden Johnson added 13 points. Grady Hengel passed out 6 assists as Rushford-Peterson had 14 assists on 16 field goals.

The Lions had 14 assists as well and also six fewer turnovers. R-P (11-10) had six more rebounds and outscored Spring Grove by six points at the free throw line, but the Lions held a 15-point advantage from 3-point land during an 11-point win. Grove hit 10 of 18 treys, while R-P went 5 for 21.

After an early turnover, Spring Grove (20-1) scored on 10 of its next 15 possessions while storming out to a 24-9 lead. However, that 15-to-1 Lion run was followed by a 10-point Trojan scoring spurt on the way to Spring Grove’s 29-21 halftime lead. Coming out of the break, a stream of six Lion steals/Trojan turnovers resulted in a 15-point spread. The Grove guys would lead by as many as 18 points before Rushford-Peterson got back within 11 at the end.

The Trojan B-team edged Spring, 46-42. There was a junior high split with Spring Grove taking the eighth grade game, 38-28, and a Trojan triumph in the seventh grade game, 30-19.
