The Houston boys scored first, but Spring Grove tallied the next 11 points and were off and running to a 67-21 home runaway win on Jan. 17. The Lions’ 16 steals resulted in 22 fast-break points and contributed to 27 Hurricane turnovers. Grove handled the ball with only 7 turnovers and allowed the ‘Canes only one trip to the free throw line. The Lions improved to 9-1 (7-0 SEC), while Houston, mostly a sophomore team, dropped to 2-10 (2-7 SEC).

While Grove limited Houston to a measly 21 points, Lion senior guard Tysen Grinde put in 25 points to go with 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists with no turnovers. Elijah Solum scored 13 points, and Jaxon Strinmoen added 12 points in addition to corralling a team-high rebounds. With Ethan Crouch out with injury, Caleb Griffin drew a starting assignment and responded with 7 points, 5 rebounds and an assist.
The Lions outscored the ‘Canes 33-13 in the first half and 34-8 following the break. Neither team was charged with many fouls (SG 8, Houston 9) and therefore did not spend much time at the free throw line (SG 6 for 7, Houston 0 for 1). Both teams enjoyed only mediocre success from 3-point land with Grove going 5 for 23 (22%) and Houston 3 for 13 (23%). But the outcome was decided close to the basket with the Lions earning a 46-to-12 advantage in the lane.
The Lion B-team (8-1) cruised to a 52-19 win after the eighth graders (5-2) clamed a 49-18 victory. The Spring Grove seventh graders (5-1) won 38-21.
