Lion boys complete sweep of Schaeffer, 65-35

February 2, 2023 by Lee Epps

Spring Grove Lions Boys Basketball

The Spring Grove boys extended their conference winning streak to 26 games while completing a season sweep of those other Lions from Schaeffer Academy, 65-35. This final score on Jan. 26 at Spring Grove was similar to the previous 69-37 result at Rochester. Spring Grove (13-1, 10-0 SEC) leads the SEC East Division with four fewer league losses than both third-place Schaeffer (9-8, 7-4 SEC) and second-place Lanesboro (12-5, 9-4 SEC).

Elijah Solum led all scorers with 20 points while Tysen Grinde added 12 along with 11 points each from Caleb Griffin and Jaxon Strinmoen. Grinde had team highs with 6 steals and 5 rebounds. Jacob Olerud (7 points) passed out 3 assists with only a single turnover. Schaeffer’s all-conference sophomore Ethan VanSchepen had 10 hard-earned points and a game-high 8 rebounds.

In this rematch, Schaeffer better handled the ball against the SG pressure defense with 10 fewer turnovers and four more assists. The Rochester boys also shot better (41%), but so did Spring Grove, which fired away with a season-best percentage from both 3-point range (58%, 8 for 14) and the field overall (57%). Those percentages were strong from the field, but the same 57% (8 for 14) from the foul line was not as desirable. However, Schaeffer was limited to only three free throws (2 for 3).

Wade Grinde’s Lions had only 8 turnovers – exceptional single-digit achievement in half of their games thus far. Each team had 11 assists, but Schaeffer lost possession 21 times.

Schaeffer scored the first four points, before Spring Grove shots began to fall. Grove led 16-10 before a 16-point run led to a 33-16 halftime rout. The home team would outscore the visitors 32-19 in the second half. Spring Grove leads the series, 25 to 2 after a sixth straight win over Schaeffer.

The Spring Grove B-team (10-3) breezed to a 49-25 win. It was also a junior high sweep with the eighth graders prevailing, 38-26, and the seventh graders, 26-13.
