Lion boys claim second win in two nights over L-O

February 10, 2023 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove boys, one night after drubbing LeRoy-Ostrander at home, were even more dominant over the same Cardinals, 93-24, on the road at LeRoy on Jan. 31. Reflecting the difficulty in scheduling make-up games, it was a rare back-to-back match-up.

The state-ranked No. 12 Lions (15-1, 12-0 SEC) had a season-high 26 assists, a season-best 4 turnovers and a season-fewest 5 fouls as well as a season-high 59% shooting success from the field. They shot better on the Cardinals’ court than they did at home in Spring Grove. Six Lions hit 3-point baskets as the team shot a strong 45% (10 for 22).

Wade Grinde’s guys had a productive night at the foul line, netting 13 of 17 charity shots (76%). Including last season, it was the first time in 25 games, a Lion opponent did not go to the free throw line.

Amazingly, the Cardinals (2-16, 1-12 SEC) had the same shooting percentages as the night before – 31% overall, 35% with 2-point attempts and 22% from 3-point land. For the second straight night, sophomore point guard Camden Hungerholt led L-P scoring, this time with 14 points.

The Grove guys led 56-13 at halftime, by as many as 70 points in the second half and were up 90-22 when the running clock went into effect halfway through the second half. To avoid scoring 100 points, the Lions ran a delayed, no-shooting offense for the final nine minutes of play.

Five Lions scored in double figures with Tysen Grinde hit 8 of 10 shots (2 for 3 treys) and both free throws while putting in 20 points along with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Elijah Solum sank 6 of 7 shots, scoring 19 points while passing around 4 assists with no turnovers. Jaxon Strinmoen also hit 8 of 10 shots again having a splendid stat line with 17points, a game-high 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 5 assists with no turnovers. Caleb Griffin and Josh Newgaard each tossed in 11 points.

Six Lions had multiple assists with no turnovers. Jacob Olerud (5 points) had 2 steals and 4 assists with no turnovers. Ethan Crouch (4 points) lifted 2 steals plus 2 assists with no turnovers. Isaac Nerstad was credited with 3 assists and Hunter Holland 2 helpers, neither with a turnover. For the second straight night, sophomore point guard Camden Hungerholt led L-P scoring, this time with 14 points.

With this 36th consecutive win versus LeRoy-Ostrander, the Lion lads extended their conference winning streak to 28 games.

The Spring Grove B-team improved to 11-3 with their 54-18 win over the Redbirds. The Lion seventh graders came from behind to win an exciting contest, 23-21. L-O does not have an eighth grade team.
