Lester R. Hyland was born on October 15, 1926, in Mower County, Minn., to Sigfred and Johanna (Pederson) Hyland. He attended country school through the eighth grade and was baptized and confirmed in the Norwegian Lutheran church in Spring Valley. Les was in the Army from 1945-1946 as a technical sergeant serving in the Philippines. On September 20, 1949, Les was united in marriage to Shirley Douglas at the Congregational Church in Spring Valley. Les drove a gas transport for Ruan, hauling Standard Oil products from the terminal east of Spring Valley for 38 years.
He loved to go pheasant hunting and to shoot clay pigeons. Going camping and sitting around any campfire was something Les enjoyed to do, especially with his family. He also enjoyed going out dancing with Shirley; he could even dance while on skates. Les had a way of teaching people things without them even knowing they were being taught.
Lester is survived by his wife Shirley; children: Ron (Renee) Hyland of Owatonna, Minn., Rick (Janine) Hyland of Spring Valley, Robert Hyland of Austin, Tex., and Rebecca (Tom) Munns of Owatonna, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Arnold, Stanley, and Glen, and a sister Myrtle.
