Legion baseball Lions fall to Dover-Eyota, Chatfield

June 29, 2021 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove American Legion team (ages 19 & under) did not give up any big innings and few big extra-base hits against bigger school district squads, but the Lions only once got out of an inning without giving up a run. The first team to 10 runs won both games at Blayne Onsgard Memorial Field as Dover-Eyota won 10-1 and undefeated Chatfield triumphed 10-4 on June 21 and 24, respectively. The Grove guys (1-3) managed only three hits against the Eagles, but they out-hit Chatfield, 9 to 8.

Spring Grove scored in only one inning, while D-E (2-2-1) scored in every inning except one. A pair of Eagle pitchers combined to give up only three hits and walk only three. Two of those few hits (Nathan Solberg, Jaxon Strinmoen) and one of those few walks (Brandon Jahnke) came in the fourth inning when the Lions scored their only run, making the score 5-1.

The Eagles would add another five runs, while the Lions needed two errors and a walk to get runners on base while being blanked during the final three innings. More than half (13 of 21) of Spring Grove outs came with strikeouts, including 10 by Eagle starting pitcher Christian Hoffman.

Spring Grove pitchers walked only one and were backed up by a three-error defense (far fewer bobbles than in the previous outing.) But the Eagle hitters consistently hit the ball and mostly between Lion fielders. Only two of 17 Dover-Eyota hits went for extra bases. Nine Eagle batters had base hits, eight scored and five had RBIs.

Chatfield 10, SG 4

Spring Grove had more hits, 9 to 8, including the only two extra-base hits, but the visitors had more runs. Chatfield (5-0) had plenty of runners on base. The lead-off batter reached base in six of the seven innings, and five times that lead-off batter/runner scored. Chatfield scored in every inning while stealing 10 bases and taking advantage of six walks, two hit batters and three Lion errors. Meanwhile Spring Grove, with no stolen bases, received little charity – only two walks and one error. Chatfield defenders came up with two double plays, the first of which snuffed out the Lions’ most productive (first) inning.

Spring Grove scored three runs in the bottom of the first to lead 3-1. But then Chatfield pitcher Drew Schindler allowed only three Lions to reach base through the next five innings (2 singles, 1 walk.) The Grove guys did not score again until the last inning, touching reliever Jacob Erickson for three hits, including the only two extra-base knocks of the evening. Isaac Griffin led off with a double and scored on a two-out two-bagger by Jaxon Strinmoen. Both of those two Lions batted 2 for 3 with Strinmoen driving in three runs and Griffin scoring twice.

At the bottom of the Chatfield batting order, designated hitter Rylan Ostby was the only visitor to collect two hits (2 for 3). But among 10 in the Chatfield batting order, seven had hits, seven scored and eight swiped at least one base.

The defensive highlight for the Lions was pitcher Isaac Griffin picking off a runner at first base.
