Leahy is all-conference Lion, McHugh also honored

March 17, 2022 by Lee Epps

Spring Grove senior Jordian Leahy was a First Team selection on the 2022 All-Southeast Conference Basketball Team as determined by the SEC coaches. Lion junior Addyson McHugh received Honorable Mention. It was a second SEC honor season for Leahy who received Honorable Mention in 2021. Both were also Academic All-Conference.

Leahy, a 5-fo ot-6 senior guard, led Lion scorers with 15.5 points per game during conference contests. Not only did she earn the most free throws, but she also led Spring Grove in free throw success while sinking 72% of her charity opportunities. She also shot a good 33% from 3-point territory. The three-year starter averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.7 assists during SEC action.

McHugh, a versatile 5-10 junior, played both inside and on the perimeter. She led the Lions in steals with 4.0 thefts per conference game. Beyond the 3-point arc, she shot a good 32%. With 10.5 points per game, McHugh was Spring Grove’s second-leading scorer for the second straight year. The returning starter ranked second in blocked shots while also averaging 4.2 rebounds per game.

West Division runner-up Grand Meadow led with four selections while West Champion Kingsland had three. East champion Lanesboro placed two on the honor team, including Conference Player of the Year, Kaci Ruen.  Sydney Torgerson of Houston is the only three-year All-SEC honoree while four are two-time selections. And with seven previous Honorable Mention performers moving up, 12 of the 15 First Team/Second Team players have been previously honored.

The First and Second Teams consisted of six seniors, seven juniors, no sophomores, one freshman and an eighth grader. That means most of the honorees (nine of 15) retain eligibility for 2023, including three from Grand Meadow and two from Lanesboro.
