Kinley Soiney Leads Spring Grove Girls Past Kenyon-Wanamingo

January 9, 2024 by Lee Epps

Kinley Soiney poured in 30 points and the state-ranked No. 18 Spring Grove girls were effective in transition during a 60-40 neutral-site win over Kenyon-Wanamingo (3-5). The Dec. 27 decision was part of a holiday schedule at Hayfield.

Kinley Soiney

The Lions (8-1) shot a strong 45% from the field, much due to Soiney hitting 11 of 18 shots (61%). Grove did not rely heavily on 3-point shots but hit a season-high 46% beyond the arc (6 for 13). The Lions pushed the pace after steals and defensive rebounds to outscore the Knights, 20-to-4 with fast breaks.

In addition to scoring half of Spring Grove’s points, Soiney also had a team-high 7 rebounds while Kylie Hammel scored 11 points and rebounded 6 times. Carlie Halverson had another 6 boards while Kendal VanMinsel (6 points) and Brinley Middendorf each grabbed 5 rebounds.                                                                                                                                                               Siri Konkel (6 points) and Emerson Ingvalson (5 points) each passed out 6 assists.

The Lions led 13-11 before they separated with a 17-1 run as they scored on 8 of 12 possessions while the Knights had 8 turnovers during 11 possessions. Up by 14 points at halftime (33-19), Spring Grove led by as many 29 during the seconds half.

The downside for the Lions was the 20 turnovers, one more than K-W, the first time this season Spring Grove had not won the turnover battle.
