James Roger Root, age 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, Minnesota.
James was born on April 5, 1933, in Spring Valley, Minnesota, to Elezer and Ruth (Hornseth) Root. He graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1951 and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1957.
James enjoyed life to the fullest and especially loved driving around town and traveling. Some of his favorite adventures included trips to Colorado, Washington, D.C., and visits to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was a devoted Minnesota sports fan and enjoyed cheering on the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins.
James had a generous heart and believed in giving back. He supported veterans, cancer and children’s charities, quietly helping organizations and causes that were important to him.
He will be lovingly remembered by many family members and friends whose lives he touched throughout the years.
James was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and one brother.
A private family committal service will be held at a later date.
