Chatfield head football coach Jeff Johnson was awarded “Coach of the Year” at the Rochester Sports banquet on January 17. Johnson, facing adversity, led the Gophers to the 2021 Class AA state title, his second state title as coach.

R-P’s boys (#7 in A, 5-2, 9-3) dropped a ranked/ranked battle with PEM (#8 in AA) by a 63-42 final. Nick Eickhoff hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to propel Kingsland over W-K 49-47. GMLOS’ #4 Donavon Felten beat Goodhue’s #2 Maddox O’Reilly 2-1 on the mats. This week’s big boy’s scorers (not listed above): M-C’s Cayden Tollefsrud (38 points, 15 rebounds) versus SA in 61-59 loss; L-O’s Tanner Olson (31 and 27 points) versus G-E and M-C in 77-47 and 81-63 wins; FC’s Luke Hellickson (25) and Jayce Kiehne (21) versus SC in a 97-61 win; R-P’s Justin Ruberg (24) versus D-E in a 62-46 win; Kingsland’s Jayden Brink (23) versus M-C in a 62-42 win; FC’s Kiehne (20) versus D-E in a 78-71 loss. This week’s big girl’s scorers: Lanesboro’s Kaci Ruen (26) versus M-C in a 55-33 win as Burros (5-1, 11-4) won fifth straight; SG’s Addyson McHugh (25) in a 58-55 loss to Houston; FC’s Courtney Hershberger (24) in a 63-32 in over SC; R-P’s Kaylee Ruberg (24 and 20 points) versus D-E and PEM in 78-53 and 66-46 losses; Kingsland’s Katelyn Hauser (22) in a 58-41 win over L/P as the Knights (6-0, 10-7) stayed atop the SEC-West; M-C’s Kinley Soiney (21) in a 44-42 win over L-O; L-O’s Benita Nolt (21) in the same game; L-O’s Jordan Runde (21) in a 56-45 loss to SC; SG’s Jordian Leahy (20) in a 58-33 in over L-O; GM’s River Landers (20) in a 66-29 win over L-O as the Larks (7-1, 12-3) trail Kingsland in the West. L-O’s Nolt had 62 rebounds in four games.
