Hot-shooting Spring Grove girls too much for Mabel-Canton

February 23, 2023 by Lee Epps

It had been six years since the Spring Grove girls had shot as well as they did during a 60-22 road win at Mabel-Canton on Feb. 15. Their 48% from the field was their best in the last 156 games, dating back to the 2017 season. And it was not that the Lions were shooting lay-ups; they scored two-thirds (40) of their 60 points from the perimeter, including a season-high 10 baskets from 3-point range.

Meanwhile, Mabel-Canton (7-18, 5-12 SEC) was suffering through an opposite fate, The Cougars hit three of their first six shots and led 8-7, but the home teams would finish at 20% from the field, the coldest of any Lion opponent in 25 games this season. That chilly percentage was due in part to the Lions’ season-high 7 blocked shots. Wiping out that Mabel-Canton lead, Spring Grove (12-13, 10-7 SEC) outscored their hosts 31-2 before taking 38-10 lead into halftime.

Lion senior Addyson McHugh led three statistical categories. She sizzled while sinking 5 of 8 shots from 3-point land to lead all scorers with 23 points (one more than the Cougar team) and top all rebounders with 9 boards in addition to a game-high 5 blocked shots.  Freshman Siri Konkel scored 8 points while also passing out a career-high 10 assists with no turnovers as the Lions posted a season-high 20 assists with only 9 turnovers. Emerson Ingvalson added 12 points and 4 assists while Brinley Middendorf went 4 for 4 from the field while scoring 10 points and rebounding 7 times.

No Cougar scored more than 4 points. Returning all-conference sophomore Kinley Soiney, recovering from a recent injury, sat out the second half after scoring 2 points and securing 6 rebounds before halftime.

Two nights after 41 fouls were whistled at LeRoy-Ostrander, this game at Mabel-Canton was relatively whistle-free with only 11 fouls called. The four fouls for Mabel-Canton were the fewest for a Lion opponent this season

This 38-point spread was not characteristics of recent Cougars versus Lions clashes. During their last 16 games, the average winning margin was just seven points. Oddly enough, the visiting team had the best shooting percentage in the teams’ two games this season, but Spring Grove won both times. Back in mid-January, the Lions had rallied from behind to defeat Mabel-Canton, 57-45. The neighboring rivals have now met 112 times with each team winning 56 games.

Mabel-Canton has no B-team this year and SG no eighth grade squad. The Cougars won the seventh grade game.
