Grove Girls Shackle Schaeffer, Houston

November 16, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - High School Volleyball

Spring Grove volleyball improved to 6-3 with a second 3-0 sweep of 0-7 winless Schaeffer Academy (25-7, 25-13, 25-20) and a far more competitive 3-1 victory over Houston (25-10, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17). For the week, Maggie Lile served 32-for-34 with 9 aces.  Against Schaeffer, a dozen Grove girls had kills and seven had assists as SG employed the entire lineup.  SG had 28 kills and served more aces (17) than Schaeffer had kills (13) and aces (3) combined.  Visiting Houston took the only set in which it had more winning points (15) than errors (8). Overall, the Lions earned a 44-30 margin in kills and served twice as many aces (14) as did the Hurricanes (7 aces/14 errors). SG hit with 16% efficiency to Houston’s 9%. SG dominated set one, but trailed 16-17 in set two before Houston misfires fueled a closing 8-2 Lion run. But then the ‘Canes excelled with 10 kills and only two errors during a 25-23 win in set three, which was tied 13 times. Serving decided set four – an 8-point decision (25-17) with an 8-point margin at the service line – SG 4 aces (no errors), Houston 4 errors (no aces).  Addyson McHugh led the Lions with 19 kills, an ace block, and 5 ace serves. Julia Halverson added 6 kills and served 18-18 with 3 aces. Lile served 4 aces and defended with 19 digs. For Houston (2-7), Emma Geiwitz scored with 10 kills and Sydney Torgerson 9.
