Gopher Wrestling Takes Tri at GMLOS with Cal/Hou

Chatfield and Caledonia/Houston wrestling descended upon Grand Meadow for a notable Journal 11 Section 1A wrestling triangular hosted by GMLOS. Eight ranked wrestlers were in action. The Gophers continued their strong season with two wins. Chatfield (#10 in A, 6-1) versus the Warriors (Class A Lean and Mean, 10-1) was the marquee dual. Their match featured no forfeits, five matches decided by decision, and three major decisions. The Gophers trailed just once, 4-0. They took 113 (Ryan House fall), 120 (#6 at 113 Gage Bartels over Simon Seymour 4-2), and 126 (Ben Carrier fall) to lead 15-4. Cal/Hou then took 132 (Owen Denstad over Carson Rowland 8-4), 138 (#1 Isaac Blocker over Jack Dornack by 14-6 major), and 145 (Tucker Ginther over Jackson Schild 7-1) to pull to down 15-14. But Chatfield won five of the final seven matches. A win at 182 (#2 Grady Schott over Eric Mauss by 12-3 major) put Chatfield up insurmountably 34-14. They prevailed 40-23. The Gophers upper weight run also included pins by Luke Carrier (152), #4 Kail Schott (170), and Ethan Ruskell (220), plus a Thad Evans 10-6 decision over Cory Scanlan (160). Cal/Hou’s other wins were at 106 (Braxton Lange over Kaisen Johnson by 10-2 major), 195 (#8 Ayden Goetzinger over #6 Campbell Berge 5-4), and 285 (Grant Ness pin). The teams had just seen each other days earlier (Cal/Hou Quad), but hadn’t wrestled. Chatfield also beat GMLOS 53-21. The Gophers won the first five weights to lead 23-0 and took forfeits at 152 (L-Carrier), 182 (#2 G-Schott), and 195 (#6 Berge) to ensure victory. B-Carrier (126), Rowland (132), #4 K-Schott (170), and Ruskell (220) had pins. Bartels (#6 at 113) won a 17-2 tech fall. The Gophers got decision wins at 106 (Johnson over Cole Sheely 10-6) and 120 (House over Timmy Hogfeldt 4-3). GMLOS got pins from #2 Cohen Wiste (138), #4 Donavon Felten (145), and Christian Luthe (285). They took 160 by decision (Braxten Wiste over Evans 5-2). Rounding out the tri, Cal/Hou beat GMLOS 47-21. Said dual had three tight bouts in succession. GMLOS won each. Tops was #2 Cohen Wiste beating #1 Isaac Blocker by 3-2 decision in triple overtime at 138. Wiste escaped in sudden death victory for the win. Fourth-ranked D-Felten followed with a 4-2 decision win over T. Ginther at 145. B-Wiste followed with a 4-3 decision win over Cory Scanlan at 152. But the Warriors won nine of 14 matches, taking 182 (E. Mauss) and 220 (#8 A. Goetzinger) by forfeit. S. Seymour (120), O. Denstad (132), Austin Swenson (160), and Tyler Jennings (195) had pins. B. Lange (106) and Alec Weinbender (170) each won 10-0 major decisions. The Warriors one decision win was at 113 (Hunter Frank over Delaney Alden 12-7). A. Quintana (126) and C. Luthe (285) had GMLOS’ pins. Chatfield improved to 8-1. They haven’t lost in conference. Caledonia/Houston is 11-2. GMLOS is 4-7.
