Chatfield’s teams, all of them, boys basketball, girls basketball, and wrestling, saw only wins the week of January 3. The b-ball squads swept Triton first. At home, Chatfield’s guys out-scored the Cobras 48-38 in the second half, erasing a 30-29 halftime deficit. They prevailed 77-68. Juniors Drew Schindler (24 pts, 8-10 FTs, 4-10 threes, 4 asts) and Isaac Stevens (22 pts, 10-12 FGs, 8 rebs) led the way. The duo combined for 29 second half points. Eli Hopp (10 pts, 5 rebs) and Connor Jax (9 pts, 3-5 threes, 4 rebs, 4 asts) helped. Chatfield made 27 of 49 FGs (55%), 11 of 25 threes (44%) and 12 of 17 free throws (71%). In Dodge Center, the girls built a 36-26 halftime lead and beat Triton 65-57. Senior Peyton Berg (22 pts, 9-17 FGs, 14 rebs, 8 stls) had a huge game. Kara Goetzinger (12 pts, 7 rebs), Zayda Priebe (8 pts, 9 rebs), and Anna Kivimagi (8 pts, 5 asts) helped. Two nights later, Chatfield wrestling swept a home triangular with St. Charles and PEM. The Gophers downed St. Charles 72-3. Chatfield took 126 (Ben Carrier), 152 (Luke Carrier), 160 (Sulley Ferguson), 195 (Ethan Ruskell), 220 (Dallas Burris), and 285 (Caden Nolte) by forfeit. Javier Berg (106), Ryan House (113), Gage Bartels (120), Nathan Allen (132), and Carson Rowland (138) had pins. All were in the first period, save House. Kail Schott (#4 at 170) won a 13-9 decision over SC’s Jett Thoreson (#3 at 160). Grady Schott (182) won a 5-0 decision. PEM then fell 45-25. The Gophers built a 27-9 lead after 145. They never trailed. After wins from 152 through 170, PEM closed to down 27-21 heading to the final four weights. But Chatfield took three of those to clinch the match. Berg (106), B-Carrier (126), Rowland (138), Jack Dornack (145), G-Schott (182), Ruskell (220), and Nolte (285) had pins. Bartels (120) won an 11-6 decision. All 14 weights were wrestled. Chatfield won eight, PEM six. Seven of Chatfield’s eight wins were by pin. Three of PEM’s six win were by decision and another by DQ. A night later, Gopher b-ball teams swept FC. The guys took out the Falcons 86-65 on the road. FC out-shot Gophers percentage-wise from field 22 of 44 (50%) to 32 of 69 (46%), from distance 8 of 22 (36%) to 7 of 22 (32%), and from the line 13 of 16 (81%) to 15 of 26 (58%), but the Gophers took more shots and won glass 38 to 27 including 23 to 8 offensively. Chatfield had 22 second-chance-points, FC 7. Schindler (22 pts, 9-13 FGs, 4-8 threes, 5 rebs, 6 asts) and Stevens (20 pts, 9 rebs) again did big work. Cole Johnson (12 pts, 8 rebs, 9 asts) and Jax (12 pts, 5 rebs, 5 slts) helped. FC was led by Jayce Kiehne (17 pts, 4-4 FTs) and Luke Hellickson (17 pts, 6-9 FGs, 5-8 threes). Gunner Benson (13 pts, 4-4 FTs), Jake Fishbaugher (10 pts, 9 rebs), and Bryce Corson (8 pts, 6 rebs, 7 asts) helped. FC dropped to 0-5, 2-7. Chatfield’s girls held FC to eight first half points (34-8). They cruised to a 53-20 win despite not scoring their last 12 possessions. It was Chatfield’s tenth victory. They got balance from Jaiden Zimmerman (12 pts), Priebe (10 pts, 4-5 FGs, 9 rebs), Shea Jech (9 pts, 11 rebs), and Berg (10 pts, 5 rebs). Alyssa Britton had 8 (pts) and 8 (rebs) to lead FC. The Falcons fell to 0-6, 2-9. Gopher wrestling (#10 in A) improved to 4-1 overall. Boys basketball improved to 3-1, 6-1. Jeremy McBroom’s guys have won five straight. Girls basketball improved to 3-2, 10-4.
