January 10, 2022 by Paul Trende

Chatfield boys basketball had a successful holiday tournament run.  Jeremy McBroom took his team to the WSU Holiday classic and picked up two wins.  They first beat Prairie du Chein 67-35.  Junior guard Drew Schindler scored a game-high 24 points (9-12 FTs, 5-8 threes).  He had 16 in the first half.  Eli Hopp (14 pts, 4-5 FGs, 4-4 FTs, 5 rebs), Connor Jax (10 pts, 6 rebs), Isaac Stevens (9 pts, 9 rebs), Sam Backer (7 pts, 4 rebs), and Cole Johnson (2 pts, 1-4 FGs, 8 asts) made it a team effort.  Hopp had 12 in the second half.  The Gophers hit 19 of 24 free throws (79%), 8 of 18 threes (44%), and 20 of 40 field goals (50%).  They had 16 assists.  Chatfield then downed 1AA foe Zumbrota-Mazeppa 63-52.  They rode a 40-point first half (40-31 at halftime).  Johnson had 11 in the half, Schindler 10.  Hopp then had 11 points in the second half.  Hopp (16 pts, 5-9 FGs, 4-6 FTs) led four Gophers in double figures.  Johnson (14 pts, 4 asts, 6 stls), Schindler (11 pts), and an efficient Jax (11 pts, 4-5 FGs, 2-2 FTs) also got there. Stevens chipped in 9 (pts) and 9 (rebs).  Six of his boards were offensive.  The Gophers shot just short of 50% (23 of 48 > 48%) from the field including 5 of 13 (39%) from deep.  Chatfield improved to 2-1, 4-1.
