Burro Contingent Adds to Lanesboro Golf Legacy
Lanesboro prep golf has a nice legacy. The Burros routinely send a guy or gal (or more) to state. That never-flat course up on the hill above “The Boro’ seems to groom good golfers, and 2023 was no different. The Burros sent three golfers to state individually. On the girls’ side, Chloe Schnebly took on her second state meet. On the guys’ side, Hayden Lawstuen took on his second while 8th grader Jack Brogle dabbled at the big meet for a first time. Lawstuen had the top finish. The senior competed in 2021 amidst the Section 1A champion Lanesboro boys’ team. He was the second-highest Burro finisher that year behind Cale Anderson, as Lawstuen shot a 36-hole 177 to tie for 56th place. This year, he improved, but his final 18 holes doomed what could have been a very notable effort. Lawstuen was tied for 9th after
posting a Day 1 77 (39/38). All his Day 1 scores were bogey or better. He had two birdies, nine pars, and seven bogeys. But on Day 2, there were no birdies. And a couple doubles and a triple bogey sent the score a bit northward. All three were posted his final nine holes. Shooting a Day 2 85, Lawstuen finished with a 162 (39/38/40/45) and he tied for 32nd place. He was nine-over-par heading to his final nine holes, which he also shot nine-over-par. Lawstuen did drop 15 strokes off his previous state appearance (177) in 2021. Classmate Chloe Schnebly took on her second state meet. She got a smidgen better than last year. Schnebly shot a Day 1 103 (54/49) and a Day 2 107 (50/57) to post a 210 score. Schnebly was able to post just four pars and 11 bogeys. Everything else was doubles, triples, or quads. The 13th was her bugaboo as she posted two quads (going +8 on that one hole). She tied for 64th place. Schnebly shot 213 (99/114) in taking 63rd place last year. She goes out a three-time SEC Meet individual champion and two-time state qualifier. Schnebly is the first Burro gal to go to state in back-to-back years since Johanna Bearson in 2012 and 2013. Finally, Jack Brogle, just an 8th grader, took on his first state meet. Brogle shot a Day 1 89 (45/44) to tie for 67th place after 18 holes. But the youngster tossed out an impressive 81 (42/39) Day 2. Three double bogeys and two triple bogeys Day 1 gave way to just two double bogeys on Day 2. Brogle added 11 pars Day 2 after having six Day 1. He thus moved up the leaderboard. Finishing with a 170 (45/44/42/39), Brogle got better every round and tied for 49th place. He oddly enough tied with two Section 1A foes, FC’s Brock Sikkink and Southland’s Cohen Wiste (who Brogle was paired with Day 2). Brogle was the second highest 7th or 8th grader in the field behind Dawson-Boyd’s Carson Stratman, who was just above him on the leaderboard (47th place, 169). The last ‘Journal-covered” 8th grade boy to make state (not amidst a team) was FC’s Jake Fishbaugher (which bodes well for Brogle moving forward). Fishbaugher (141) took second to New Life Academy’s Cole Witherow (139) atop the leaderboard individually this year, while Lakeview (636) beat Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (643) for the team title. Brogle is the third Brogle sibling to make state, as sisters Macayla and Lauren have done so amidst LFCMC track and field.
