Just how long is the streak? Falcon golfers Myleigh Scheevel and Lily Miller might know. But even their memories are probably a little blurry at this point. Back in 2014, the duo was in elementary school watching their sisters Madison Scheevel (7th grader) and Grace Miller (8th grader) play at their first state golf meet. The sister combinations will graduate six and seven years apart. Thus, Myleigh and Lily, now juniors, have been trekking to Becker more than half their lives. FC has made state every year since 2014. The streak is at 10. The 2024 1A title is FC’s girls golf’s tenth straight crown (COVID year excluded). This year’s crown probably was never ever really in doubt, and it certainly was not in doubt after the Falcons led Hayfield 351 to 396 after Day 1. The lead only widened on Day 2. FC (716) topped the Vikings (794). Lanesboro (802) and Blooming Prairie (879) taking third and fourth. Scheevel matched one of her sister Madison’s big accomplishments. She claimed the individual 1A medalist honor (83/88 > 171), outshooting senior teammate Aubrey Larson (82/91 > 173) on Day 2. Larson led Scheevel by one stroke after 18-holes. Scheevel had 11 pars and four birdies. A 37 and a 38 were her best nine-hole totals. Larson had 12 pars and one birdie. Two 41’s were her best nine-hole scores. But FC put four in the top 10. All six made the top 20. No other team did either. Miller (90/94 > 184) took sixth just ahead of teammate Annika Mensink (96/92 > 188) in seventh. Miller’s lowest nine-hole score was 43, Mensink 45. All four were on last year’s state runner-up team that graduated individual second place Courtney Hershberger and Chloe Morem. FC’s fifth and sixth highest scorers, Maddie Topness (97/104 > 201) and Ella Dahly (108/108 > 216), tied for 11th and took 18th place. Three other area golfers punched their state trip as well. Lanesboro sisters 7th grader Addison McCabe (95/86 > 181) and junior Ellie McCabe (86/97) took fourth and fifth behind FC’s top duo and Hayfield’s Carly Bronson (88/89 > 177). Both McCabes posted two nine-hole 43’s. GMLO frosh Gabby Tangren (94/96 > 190) took 8th place behind FC’s Miller and Mensink. Her best nine-hole score was a 44. All three thus made Becker individually. Ryley Guy (95/105 > 210) took 11th place to lead Kingsland. Lexi Weichert (107/99 > 206) took 16th place to lead Houston. Forty-total girls competed two 18-hole rounds, which were held back-to-back days at Rochester’s par-71 Eastwood Golf Course. Aaron Mensink’s FC group heads to state looking to added to their legacy which includes a state title in 2016 and four runner-up finishes (2015, 2017, 2018, 2023).
