In a key early SEC girls game, Houston and defending West champion Grand Meadow did battle. Most notable in the first half was the Larks starting the game 0-16 from deep and digging a hole as deep as 19-8. But GM then hit four of five threes, and by halftime, they led 27-26. The second half was then tight. GM’s biggest lead was six (34-28), Houston’s biggest also six (51-45). The later came because of the ‘Canes’ two biggest baskets. Aubry Boldt hit a three at the 3:52 mark to make it 48-44, and Avery Kingsley hit a three at the 1:30 mark to make it 51-45. GM got a three-point-play from Lexy Foster late (0:33) to make it 51-48. The Larks then had two possessions down that score. They missed two game-tying threes in the final 0:10. Dale Moga’s group posted its first win over GM since 2020 by 51-48 final. Emily Botcher (12 pts, 6 rebs), Boldt (12 pts, 4 asts), and Olivia Yohe (11 pts, 3-5 threes) led Houston. Kingsley chipped in 8 (pts), 5 (rebs), and 4 (asts). Lauren Queensland (18 pts, 8 rebs), L-Foster (13 pts, 17 rebs), and Gracie Foster (10 pts, 10 rebs) led GM. Houston hit 9 of 22 threes (41%) and shot 19 of 49 overall (39%). GM was 6 of 39 threes (15%) and 19 of 63 from the field (30%). GM did outrebound Houston 51 to 27 (including 24 offensive rebounds). GM won 60-35 last year. Houston (4-0, 5-4) leads the SEC with SG (4-0, 5-1) while GM (2-1, 3-2) has one loss like Kingsland (3-1, 4-1) and Lanesboro (3-1, 6-4).
