Girls Basketball: #10 Warriors Clinch Share of East, Klug Become All-Time Scorer
Caledonia girls basketball is on a roll. Scott Sorenson’s #10 in AA Warriors had a dominating three-win week that featured their best player setting the girls’ all-time scoring mark. In an afternoon Martin Luther King Day game, the Warriors ended the seven-game win streak of #6 in Class A Mayer Lutheran (11-5) by a 74-44 final. Senior guard Aubrie Klug smashed, hitting 8 of 15 threes for 32 points (plus 4 steals). Jessica Stendel (15 pts, 5 rebs) and Nicole Banse (10 pts, 5 rebs, 5 asts, 9 stls) also hit double figures. Kensey King (6 pts, 10 rebs) and Ashlyn Reinhart (2 pts, 4 rebs, 8 asts) helped. The Warriors hit 10 threes to ML’s 1. Caledonia had 16 steals. The Warriors then took down Chatfield in TRC action 89-42. Klug again went for 32 points (5-10 threes, 13 of 22 FGs, 7 rebs). Banse added a triple-double (15 pts, 10 asts, 11 stls). King (10 pts) and Reinhart (8 pts) helped. Grace Schroeder (11 pts) and Amaya Harmening (10 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts) led the Gophers. Caledonia finished off the week in a matchup with TRC-East rival Cotter/Hope Lutheran. The Warriors trailed 8-4 early, but their defense help goad 21 Rambler turnovers in the stanza. At half, Caledonia led 39-21. In the second half, Klug, a 5’10” senior guard, set the all-time girls scoring mark, surpassing Mariah Schroeder (1,761). Caledonia rolled 77-55 behind King (21 pts, 8 rebs), Banse (19 pts, 6 asts, 4 stls), and Klug (19 pts, 4 stls). Stendel (10 pts, 7 rebs) and Reinhart (6 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts, 4 stls) helped. Alayna Hardy, a 6’2” junior center, led the Ramblers with 25 points. Caledonia (11-0, 15-3) won their eighth straight game. clinched a share of the TRC-East title over Cotter/HL (8-3, 11-9) and R-P (6-3, 11-6).
Three Rivers Conference Girls Basketball (1/20 & 1/23)
St. Charles 53, Fillmore Central 56 (FC: H. Vaalemoen 22 pts (6-7 FTs); S. Bronner 18 pts, 13 rebs; Kyla Hellickson 8 pts, 8 rebs. FC overcame a 37-30 halftime deficit. Vaalemoen hit two free throws to put FC up 51-50 (1:39), their first second half lead. Aubrey Daniels hit two free throws to make it 53-50 (0:31.6). Saint Addy Overkamp tied it 53-53 with a three (0:18). Hellickson then hit one of two free throws to make it 54-53 (0:02). The Saints then had a turnover.)
Chatfield 58, Dover-Eyota 77 (C: G. Schroeder 28 pts (9-17 FGs, 3-9 threes); Lexi Kivimagi 9 pts (3-9 threes), 5 asts; Sophia Goldsmith 9 pts. The Eagles led 31-30 at the half but won the second half 36-28. The Gophers are 2-8 in the TRC, 4-14 overall)
Southeast Conference Girls Basketball (1/19 – 1/22)
Houston 41, Lanesboro 50 (L: J. Storhoff 22 pts (5-8 threes), 6 rebs, 5 asts, 5 stls; Emma Ruen 12 pts, 4 stls. H: Jorja Meyer 14 pts, 11 rebs; Avery Kingsley 8 pts. Threes: Lanes 7 of 22 (32%), Hou 4 of 18 (22%). TOs: Lanes 10, Hou 17. The Burros’ 29-26 halftime margin was their slimmest of the second half. Lanesboro limited Houston leading scorer Aubry Boldt (20.1 PPG) to two points (1 of 7 FGs) while ending a Hurricane four-game win streak. The Burros won their fourth in a row)
LeRoy-Ostrander 38, Grand Meadow 62 (GM: N. Warmka 24 pts, 9 rebs, 4 stls; G. Foster 23 pts (4-10 threes), 10 rebs, 4 asts, 5 stls. L-O: Maria Alamarz-Nolt 15 pts, 9 rebs. The Larks never trailed. GM is 1-7 in the SEC, 2-14 overall. L-O is 0-10, 0-16)
Kingsland 42, Spring Grove/Mabel-Canton 70 (SG: Kinley Soiney 17 pts, 5 rebs; Siri Konkel 15 pts, 7 asts, 5 stls; Kylie Hammel 7 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts. K: Skylar Lentz 11 pts, 9 rebs; Lydia Redman 9 pts, 6 asts. The Lions used a full-court defense to create an early 19-0 run. Nine of 10 Lions had assists. The Knights are 2-7, 4-14)
Non-Conference Girls Basketball (1/20 & 1/22)
#5 in A New Richland/Hartland/Ellendale/Geneva 71, Grand Meadow 41 (GM: G. Foster 15 pts; N. Warmka 14 pts, 10 rebs. The Panthers improved to 15-2 with their 15th straight win)
Wabasha-Kellogg 51, Kingsland 56 (K: M. Runck 20 pts (five threes); Hailee Warren 16 pts; Jaelee Hagstrom 9 pts. Kingsland ended a four-game losing streak, avenged a 58-33 loss at W-K earlier in the year)
#7 in AA Rochester-Lourdes 86, Chatfield 29 (C: Amaya Harmening 6 pts, 6 rebs)
Houston 51, #9 in A Hayfield/Schaeffer Academy 69 (Hou: A. Boldt 25 pts, 7 rebs; Julia Swenson 10 pts; J. Meyer 6 pts, 11 rebs. The Vikings improved to 15-4 on the year. Houston is 5-3 in the SEC, 8-10 overall)
Alden-Conger/G-E 53, Lanesboro 54 (L: J. Storhoff 25 pts (3-8 threes), 7 rebs, 13 stls; Cora Mayer 14 pts, 9 rebs; Hailey Erickson 10 pts), 6 rebs. Lanesboro led 27-18 early in the second half but later trailed 51-42 (under 4:00). They ended on a 12-2 run. Storhoff scored 11 of the 12 points and was in on seven steals in the span. She tied it 51-51 with a three (1:27). Erickson put the Burros ahead 52-51 with a free throw (0:50.9). Storhoff then had a steal and hoop to make it 54-51 (0:43). AC/G-E made two free throws (0:35.2) to make it 54-53 but they had fouls to give. The Burros held possession the final 35.2 seconds.)
