Spring Grove/Mabel-Canton rallied from a 15-point deficit and won by one point with a 3-point basket by Siri Konkel with two seconds to play. Teammate Kinley Soiney grabbed previously undefeated Southland’s desperation inbounds at the buzzer, and the Lions escaped with a 61-60 home win to stay alive in the SEC race. Earlier in the week, SG/MC won on the road at Kingsland, 51-28. It all created a three-way, one-loss, SEC-leading logjam with SG/MC (5-1 SEC, 7-2), Southland (4-1, 5-1) and Lanesboro (4-1, 5-2). After the Lions rallied from 15 points down versus Southland, there were nine lead changes and six tie scores during the final 14 minutes. SG/M-C had only two turnovers through the first 31 possessions of the second half, but two straight turnovers allowed Southland to go from two points down to two points up with 15 seconds to play. The Lions opted for a two-point play but missed a close-in potential score-tying shot. Kylie Hammel rebounded in the lane and passed out to Konkel, who promptly buried the 3-point game-winner. Outscored by seven points from the field, SG/MC had an eight-point advantage at the foul line, hitting 20 of 29 free throws (69%). Konkel had a game-high 18 points while Hammel had a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double plus 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots. Soiney was key with 7 points, 9 boards, 6 assists, and 2 blocked shots. Sophomore Lauren Hammel came off the bench to score 9 points and chase down 17 rebounds, the most for a Lion girl in nine years. At Kingsland, the Lions exploded away from a 12-12 tie to lead 33-15 at halftime. The Knights had 28 turnovers and shot only 21% to the Lions’ 35%. Hailee Warren led the Knights with 14 points, 8 rebounds. Only four Lions scored, but each was in double figures. Konkel had a game-high 16 points (3-13 threes) plus 3 assists. Soiney put in 15 points (3-6 threes) along with 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. K-Hammel added 10 points, 7 boards, and 3 assists. Brinley Middendorf put in another 10 points.
