Girls Basketball: Warriors Improve Win Streak to Five
Caledonia girls basketball posted two inter-division TRC wins to improve its win streak to five. At Fillmore Central (1-0, 3-0), the Warriors (2-0, 3-1) got a battle from the Falcons for the first half. Despite starting the game up 10-2 and then leading 31-21 later, the Warriors advantage was cut to 31-28 late in the stanza. FC lived at the free throw line, hitting 12 of 14 first half freebies. But a five-point possession late was a key sequence. Nicole Banse scored and was fouled, missing the and-one free throw. But she got her own rebound on the errant shot and found back-court senior teammate Aubrie Klug for a three. The sequence doubled Caledonia’s lead from 34-29 to 39-29. They went to half up 41-29 and led by double digits the entire second half in posting a 68-49 win. Klug scored a game-high 28 points (4-9 threes). She scored everything in a span of 40 total Warrior points from mid-first-half to mid-second-half. Banse (12 pts, 8 rebs, 4 asts, 6 stls) and Kensey King (7 pts, 10 rebs) were also busy. Jessica Stendel added 8 points, Ashlyn Reinhart 5 asts and 5 steals. FC was led by Sophia Bronner (12 pts, 11 rebs), Kyla Hellickson (11 pts, 9-10 FTs, 5 asts), and Hannah Vaalemoen (10 pts). The Falcons hit 18 of 22 free throws (82%) to Caledonia’s 3 of 6 (50%), but FC had 31 turnovers to Caledonia’s 21. Scott Sorenson’s Warriors then easily dispatched with La Crescent/Hokah 77-27. They led 52-7 at halftime. Klug continued her tear with 28 more points (five made threes), out-scoring the Lancers by herself. Over her last three games (Byron, FC, LC/H), she has scored 90 points! Reinhart (9 pts) and King (8 pts) helped, though 12 Warriors scored and the team hit 11 threes. Winners of five in a row, the Warriors (4-0, 5-1) have an early lead in the TRC-East over Cotter/HL (2-1, 4-2) and FC (1-1, 4-1).
Girls Basketball: Burros Hand Lions First SEC Loss
Sophomore Emma Ruen scored the game’s final eight points during the final 41 seconds, extending Lanesboro’s one-point lead into a nine-point win, 61-52, at Spring Grove/Mabel-Canton. Both the Lions (5-2) and the Burros (3-1) left the floor with 3-1 SEC records, trailing 4-0 league-leading Southland. Each team hit 6 of 17 shots beyond the 3-point arc, a good 35%. But only the Burros shot reasonably well from 2-point land, 38% to the Lions’ 28%. Lanesboro, with an 11-point run, led for much of the first half before the Lions scored 17 of the last 20 points before the break to lead 34-24. That 10-point halftime margin gradually dissipated during the second half into a seven-point Burro lead. But SG/MC was back within one point with 1:07 to play. But then, Ruen cashed in 6 of 6 free throws plus a driving basket during the final 41 seconds. Meanwhile, the Lions suffered with three late turnovers. SG/M-C came in averaging 14.5 turnovers per game before losing possession 24 times versus Lanesboro. Ruen finished with 14 points (7-8 FTs) and 7 steals. Three-time All-SEC point guard Jensyn Storhoff had a game-high 15 points plus 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals. Sophomore Cora Mayer had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. No Lions scored in double figures, but six players scored between nine and seven points. Brinley Middendorf had 9 points (4-5 FGs) and a game-most 11 rebounds. Siri Konkel had 9 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Kylie Hammel added 9 points (3-6 threes) and 5 boards. Lanesboro’s Jentrey Schreiber and SG/M-C’s Kinley Soiney each added 8 points. The Burros out scored SG 37-18 in the second half, as each team led for extended periods in each stanza. Lanesboro also beat South Winn 43-36 on the week while losing to Decorah 68-58 (See “Girls Basketball” for more). It was the Lions’ only contest of the week. Lanesboro’s win avenged a season-ending play off quarterfinal 65-57 loss in Rochester last year.
