Larks Fight Past Neighbors, Knights and Rebels
Grand Meadow girls basketball had a two-game week, playing familiar faces (from track and field) in squads from Southland and Kingsland. At home versus the Rebels, GM trailed just three times, but the last was at 41-39 with under 3:00 to play courtesy of a Juliette Matheis three-pointer (her one deep make of the game). But down the stretch, a Naomi Warmka three-point play (2:01) put Ryan Queensland’s Larks back ahead 42-41. With 1:09 left, Gracie Foster sank two free throws to make it a four-point game, 45-41. And that was enough, and the final score, in a game where GM started 10-2, but the rest of the game was close with Southland fighting uphill. Lauren Queensland (21 pts, 8-12 FTs, 14 rebs) had a big double-double to lead the charge. Foster (11 pts, 6 rebs), Rylee Schaufler (6 pts, 5 rebs) and Warmka (5 pts, 6 rebs, 5 stls) helped. Brynlee Koenigs (9 pts, 7 rebs), Matheis (9 pts, 7 rebs), and Breeley Galle (8 pts, 6 rebs) led Southland. GM was plus-nine at the free throw line, going 13 of 18 (72%) to Southland’s 4 of 4. A night later in Spring Valley, the Larks and Knights battled. GM ended the first half 7-0 to lead 28-21 at intermission. It was 39-36 GM in the second half, only for Kingsland to go scoreless the final 8:00 (0-10 FGs). And that allowed the Larks to coast to a 52-36 win. Aspen Kolling had a career-night (26 pts, 6-14 threes, 10-19 FGs) to lead the way. Foster (12 pts, 5 asts) and Queensland (9 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts) helped. Chantle Reiland (12 pts) was the sole Knight in double figures. Macie Rasmussen and Macy Runck each added six points, each making two threes. GM improved to 3-1 in the SEC, 3-1 overall. Kingsland is 0-1, 1-1.
