Southeast-Central Yellow Cast Headed by Chatfield/Caledonia Standouts

Triton (5-1, 7-3) and Chatfield (5-1, 6-3) shared the Southeast Central ‘Yellow’ sub-district in football with Caledonia (4-2, 9-3) posting the most wins and winning Section 1AA.  Rochester-Lourdes (3-3, 7-4), Dover-Eyota (2-4, 4-5), Rushford-Peterson (1-5, 3-6), and St. Charles (1-5, 2-7) rounded out the standings.  The Warriors and Gophers are thus heavily represented with All-District players, Chatfield seven and Caledonia five.  Mitchel Hinckley (6’0” 200 Sr), Kaisen Johnson (5’9” 150 Sr. WR/S), D’Andre Williams (6’0” 195 Sr. RB/DL), Jackson Bernard (6’1” 215 Sr. OL/DL), Will Boelter (6’5” 225 Sr. OL/DL), Sean Kirchner (6’1” 195 Jr. OL/LB/P), and Logan Pearson (5’7” 140 So. WR/S) are honored for the Gophers.  Hinckley and Johnson each repeat.  Hinckley earns the top award as sub-district Lineman of the Year for his work on the offensive and defensive lines (56 total tackles; four sacks; two forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries).  Johnson was their top receiver (19-303, 4 TDs receiving; 20-134 rushing), a two-way starter, plus their main punt returner (13 for 191 yards, 14.7-yard average).   The senior has been picked to play in the Minnesota High School All-Star game.  Williams led the Gophers rushing attack (125-849, 7 TDs rushing, 8 total TDs), averaging 121 yards per game (missed two games).  He had a trio of 180-yard plus efforts.  Kirchner was key on both lines while also averaging 40.5 yards per punt (23 for 933 yards).  Bernard was a key two-way starter (LB/OL) who moved up from A-D HM last year.   Boelter made A-D in his first year of varsity football for his interior defensive line work.   Pearson contributed on both sides of the ball.  Chatfield also has three A-D HM picks in Hunter Polikowsky (5’7” 165 So. RB/LB > 43-252, 3 TDs rushing), Carter Ask (6’2” 185 Jr. QB/S > 57 of 119, 749 yards, 8 TDs, 5 INTs passing; three rushing TDs), and Ross Stoehr (5’10” 160 Jr. TE/LB/K > 18 PATs and three field goals made).  Chatfield’s Jeff Johnson tri-shared the Coach of the Year honors with Triton’s Brandon Neseth and Lourdes’ Mike Kesler.  Caledonia gets five A-D picks in Noah Schroeder (Sr. TE/DE), Will Allen (Sr. QB/LB), Jack Schmitz (Sr. RB/S), Cooper Allen (So. LB/OL), and Grant King (So. WR/S).  Schroeder is the sub-district Defensive Player of the Year while W-Allen is the Offensive Player of the Year. Schroeder had a team second-best 64 total tackles with three sacks, two forced fumbles, and one recovery in helping the Warrior defense yield just 11 points per game.  Said number is eight points per game taking away the 41 scored by state champion Jackson County Central.  Schroeder was also the Warriors short-yardage back (57-296 yards, team-high 7 TDs rushing; 7-110 receiving).  W-Allen was a dual threat QB who compiled over 1,900 yards total offense (94 of 164, 1,470 yards, 14 TDs, 6 INTs passing; 106-493, 5 TDs rushing).  His QB-rating was 100.4.  Defensively, he notably had two interceptions and returned both for scores. C-Allen was a mainstay on the offensive line and at middle linebacker where the sophomore led the team in tackles with 114 total (plus he had two sacks and two forced fumbles).  King was the team’s leading ball catcher across the board (30-541, 8 TDs receiving).  Schmitz had a strong start to the year at running back (44-336 yards, 5 TDs rushing, 7.6 average; 35 total tackles, two interceptions), but an injury limited the senior offensively.    The Warriors also have seven A-D HM picks: Zeke Gengler (Sr. WR/CB > team-high four interceptions; 13-263 receiving), Maddox Walk (Sr. OL/DL > two-way line starter), Coby Hammell (Jr. WR/LB > 21-415, 5 TDs receiving; 28 tackles), Bo Knutson (Jr. RB/WR/LB > 51 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions; 28-188, TD rushing), Tyson Ginther (Jr. OL/LB > 55 tackles, interception return TD), Max Schmitz (So. OL/DL > 57 total tackles, team-high 8 sacks), and Jacob Klug (Jr. WR/CB > 34 tackles, three interceptions).   Said group helped the Warriors to a seven-game win streak and the Section 1AA title.  Rushford-Peterson gets two All-District picks in Jaxson Meldahl (5’10” 180 Sr. RB/LB) and Zach Baker (6’1” 200 Sr. OL/DL).  Meldahl is honored a third time, as he was twice All-Mid-Southeast prior.  He was the Trojans’ biggest-play running back (93-622, 2 TDs rushing; 10-154, 2 TDs receiving).  Baker was a key two-way line player with 38 tackles including eight for loss (two sacks), two fumbles recovered, and a fumble forced.  Cole Thompson (5’10” 165 Jr. LB/TE > 59 tackles, 5 TFL’s) and Carson Johnson (6’1” 170 Jr. QB/LB > 51 tackles, interception, blocked kick) make All-District HM.  Johnson started the year at QB, but played a good chunk of the season with a cast on a broken hand.

Multiple changes are of note to start the girls’ basketball season.   Last year’s Section 1A champion Goodhue, and 1A semifinalist Rushford-Peterson, are now Class AA.   Red Wing moves down to AA.  Last year’s 2AA champion NRHEG drops down to 1A, as does Lewiston-Altura.  Lyle/Pacelli is not fielding a varsity team. Spring Grove/Mabel-Canton extends its share a third year.  Hayfield and Schaeffer Academy again share.  The SEC will just be seven teams, LeRoy-Ostrander, Southland, Grand Meadow, Kingsland, SG/M-C, Houston and Lanesboro.  Section 1A is Alden-Conger/G-E, Faribault B.A., Fillmore Central, GM, Hayfield/SA, Houston, Kingsland, Lanesboro, L-O, L-A, Minnesota Academy for the Deaf, NRHEG, Southland, SG/M-C, and Wabasha-Kellogg. Section 1AA is Caledonia, Chatfield, Cotter/HL, Dover-Eyota, Goodhue, Kenyon-Wanamingo, La Crescent/Hokah, Lake City, Pine Island, PEM, Randolph/Cannon Falls (which are sharing), Red Wing, Lourdes, R-P, St. Charles, Triton and Zumbrota-Mazeppa.  Said class thus features defending section champs Goodhue and Caledonia.

One of those defending champs are the Caledonia Warriors.  Scott Sorenson’s group swept to the TRC-East title last year going 14-0 in league action.  The Warriors then handled all four section foes in the playoffs by at least 10 points in winning the section.  At state, they fell in the quarters to Minnehaha Academy but then won two to finish at Consolation Champions.  Caledonia finished a strong year at 29-4.   The Warriors had five All-TRC picks.  The big departures are all-league girls Josie Foster (5’11” Sr. G/F) and Sienna Augedahl (6’1” Sr. F).  Foster, a 1,498-point career scorer, notably averaged 15.8 PPG, 6.8 RPG, and 3.8 APG in making 1st Team Class AA All-State.  She was thrice All-TRC.  Augedahl’s length was key defensively.  But the Warriors other three All-TRC picks return, a cast headed by Class AA All-State HM selection, senior Aubrie Klug (5’10” G).  Klug averaged a team-best 20.5 PPG, around 4.0 RPG, while hitting 90-plus threes.  She is one of the section’s top scorers.  Joining her in the backcourt is All-TRC pick Nicole Banse (5’8” Sr. G > 11.3 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 3-plus APG and SPG).   Klug and Banse are each two-time All-TRC picks.  Kensey King (6’1” Sr. F > 5.0 PPG, team-best 7.0 RPG) allows the Warriors to return three starters.  Ashlyn Reinhart (5’7” Fr. G), Jessica Stendel (6’2” Jr. C) and Peyten Felton (5’9” Sr. G) are three more returnees to play in at least 20 games.  Klug, King, Banse and Felten are the team’s four returning seniors.  The Warriors have their TRC schedule including games with Cotter/HL on November 25 (home) and January 23 (away), plus R-P on December 4 (away) and February 2 (home).  They have home non-conference games with Byron, Houston, Holmen, La Crosse-Aquinas, West Salem, Mayer Lutheran, Decorah and Goodhue while going on the road to Lourdes (season-opener), Minnehaha Academy, Red Wing and Stewartville.

Rushford-Peterson had a good season a year ago.  The Trojans went 9-5 in the TRC.   They made the Section 1A semifinals but fell to eventual champion Goodhue 74-51. Joe Hatch’s group finished 17-10.  The Trojans will again look to be successful, as they bring back six of eight full-timers.  Included are their two All-TRC picks, the senior backcourt of Nadia Happel (5’6” G) and Torryn Schneider (5’5” G).  The speedy Schneider led the team with 11.4 PPG while also averaging good all-around numbers, 5.2 APG, 4.5 RPG, and 3.7 SPG.  Happel averaged 11.2 PPG with 2.6 RPG and 2.6 APG.  She led the team with 39 threes made at a 48% clip.  Also back is All-TRC HM, post-player Kaia Loney (5’11” Jr. C).  She averaged 11.3 PPG and 5.9 RPG on 52% field goals.  They give R-P a trio of returning 10-point-per-game scorers.  From there, Alannah Skalet (5’4” So. G > 6.0 PPG), Emily Helgemoe (5’6” So. G > 5.7 PPG), and Ava Helgemoe (5’9” Sr. F > 4.4 PPG) add to the continuity.   Happel, Schneider, and A-Helgemoe are the teams three returning seniors.  The Trojans’ biggest departure from last year is All-TRC HM pick Nevaeh Happel (5’10” F > 7.1 PPG, 4.6 RPG).  R-P is highly experienced which should bode well for the class ascension from A to AA.  R-P starts the season with games versus Z-M and John Marshall at the D-E tourney.  They play a home-and-home non-con series with Lanesboro. Other away non-conference games are with Southland, Hayfield/SA, and GM.  Home non-conference games are with L-O, Albert Lea, SG and Houston, plus Baldwin-Woodville at a home holiday tourney.  Notable TRC-East games are with Caledonia on December 4 (home) and February 2 (away), Fillmore Central on December 30 (home tourney) and January 23 (away).

Spring Grove/Mabel-Canton, coming off two straight SEC championships (2024 outright, 2025 shared with Grand Meadow), returns the league’s most experienced and honored lineup.  The Lions went 12-2 in the SEC and won Section 1A games over LeRoy-Ostrander and Lanesboro before finishing 22-6 after a loss to GM in the 1A semifinals.  SG/MC graduated two of the eight-player rotation, including All-SEC HM Emerson Ingvalson (5’7” F > 8.4 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 2.7 APG).  Coach Taylor Elton brings back four starters, six of the top eight players and the top three scorers and rebounders, including all three All-SEC selections, who have combined for seven All-SEC seasons.  Four-time All-SEC Kinley Soiney (5’11” Sr. G/F) had a team-best 13.7 PPG on the way to 1,671 career points.  Two-time All-SEC and three-time team M.V.P. Siri Konkel (5’4” Sr. G > 13.0 PPG) led the Lions in six statistical categories with a 2.16 assist-to-turnover ratio, 166 assists, 66 three-point baskets, 39.5% on threes, 75.9% on free throws and 68 made free throws.  Konkel already has 965 career points and 492 career assists.  All-SEC 2nd team Kylie Hammel (5’10” Sr. F) led the Lions in three categories with 6.8 RPG, 0.88 BPG and 94 free throw attempts.  She ranked second with 13.3 PPG and 3.14 SPG.  Expect key contributions from letterwinners, senior Carlie Halverson (5’7” F) plus juniors Izabel Kaufmann (5’5” G), Brinley Middendorf (5’10” F) and Layla Kittleson (5’7” F).  Addison Halverson (5’5” G/F) and Addison Kessler (5’6” G/F) are among six seniors.  The Lions open at L-A before the SEC opener at GM.  Besides the 12-game SEC slate, SG/MC has non-con home contests versus FC, Lansing Kee and St. Charles.  There are also non-con road trips to Hayfield/SA, La Crescent-Hokah, R-P, Decorah and Crestwood.  There are neutral-site games versus K-W (at Hayfield) and North Fayette Valley at the Border Battle in Decorah.

Coming off their third trip to the Section 1A finals in four years is Grand Meadow.  The Superlarks went 12-2 in the SEC a season ago, sharing the league title with Spring Grove/M-C.  After losing twice to the Lions in the regular season, GM topped SG/M-C to make the 1A finals, then falling to Goodhue 46-27.  The loss ended a 17-game win streak.  They finished a fantastic 25-3.   The Larks welcome a new coach.  Rashad Gayden takes over for Ryan Queensland.  GM graduated two All-SEC players.  Included was the SEC Player of the Year, Lauren Queensland (5’10” F), their leading scorer (18.7 PPG) and rebounder (8.9 RPG), a 1,700-plus-point career scorer.  Also graduating was All-SEC 2nd team pick Aspen Kolling (5’10” G/F > 8.4 PPG, 6.9 RPG) plus a third starter Rylee Schaufler.  GM’s top returnee is All-SEC 1st team guard Gracie Foster (5’6” Sr. > team second-best 14.5 PPG and 6.9 RPG, team-high 3.7 APG).  Foster also made a team-high 91 threes at a 35% clip.  All-SEC HM pick Naomi Warmka (5’8” Sr. F > 6.3 PPG, 7.0 RPG) also returns, as does key reserve Paisley Kolling (5’10” Jr. F).  They are the three most experienced returnees.  Myla Stejskal (5’7” G) joins Foster and Warmka as the team’s seniors.  The Larks have their SEC schedule beginning at Houston.   They then host SG/M-C (November 25) while playing at the Lions (January 6).   GM has a holiday tourney at Hayfield and the Decorah Border Battle (vs Waukon) plus other road non-con games with L-A, W-K, and Randolph/CF, and USC.  Home non-con games are with BP, Hayfield/SA, FC, NRHEG, W-K, R-P, and AC/G-E.

Houston will look to stay healthy to put forth their best season.  The Hurricanes went 9-5 in the SEC last year.  They won a Round of 16 playoff game but fell to Grand Meadow 60-25 in the 1A quarters.  Houston finished the year 17-9, but did so with a key player missing most of the season.  The health and recovery of senior guard Avery Kingsley (5’6” G) is a headline.  An All-SEC pick in 2023-2024 (team best 17.2 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.7 APG, 3.1 SPG), Kingsley missed most of last season to a knee injury (her second in her varsity career).  She averaged 15.4 points and 4.8 rebounds in the 10 games played.  But the ‘Canes have other key assets returning including 1st Team All-SEC pick Aubry Boldt (5’11” Sr. G/F > team-best 18.5 PPG, 2.8 APG, and 2.7 SPG, 4.8 RPG).  Also back is All-SEC HM selection Jorja Meyer (5’11” Sr. F/C > 9.8 PPG, 7.8 RPG), the team’s returning rebounder. From there, Julia Swenson (5’6” Jr. G > 3.8 PPG), Olivia Yohe (5’6” Sr. G > 4.2 PPG, 2.6 RPG), and Rylee Boldt (5’8” Jr. C) played in at least 20 games last season.   The main departures were starters Emily Botcher (5’10” F > 6.9 PPG, 5.5 RPG) and Ainsley Rice (5’10” F).  Kingsley, Boldt, Meyer and Yohe are the team’s four seniors.  Taking over coaching for Heath Olson is Emma Geiwitz, who, as a player, led Houston to its only state berth in 2021.  Houston has its SEC schedule including games with SG/M-C on December 5 (home) and January 29 (away).  They have the Decorah Border Battle (vs Osage), then two holiday tourney games at Lourdes.  Other away non-con contests are at FC, Caledonia, Hayfield/SA, W-K, AC/G-E, NRHEG, Z-M, and R-P.  Home non-con games are with St. Charles, Pine Island and L-A.

In Lanesboro, the Burros went 8-6 in the SEC last year.  They won a Round of 16 play-off game, but fell to Spring Grove/M-C 65-57 in the 1A quarters. Steve Storhoff’s group finished at 16-12.   Their sole All-SEC pick was guard Jensyn Storhoff (5’6” Sr.), who grabbed all-league for a third time.  Entering her fifth year on varsity, Storhoff is a most key returnee after leading Lanesboro in points (20.4 PPG), rebounds (7.0 RPG), assists (5.2 APG), and steals (4.2 SPG) last year, a tremendously well-rounded line.  She may be the SEC’s best player and it is her last year.  With a full season, the ever-rare 2,000 career points is a possibility.   Getting more wins is another possibility, as the Burros return a lot of experience.  Also back is Hailey Erickson (5’8” Sr > F > 7.6 PPG, 6.1 RPG), an All-SEC HM selection and the team’s second leading scorer/rebounder, plus Jentrey Schreiber (5’10” Jr. F > 5.0 PPG), Emma Ruen (5’7” So. G > 4.8 PPG, 3.4 RPG), Emma Root (5’9” Jr. F > 4.7 PPG, 5.6 RPG), Cora Mayer (5’9” So. F > 3.6 PPG, 4.9 RPG), and Elianna Cassman (5’6” Sr. G).  Lanesboro graduated just one of its nine 20-plus-game players from last year, post Taylor Hanson (6’0” > 5.5 PPG, 5.8 RPG).   Not relying on Storhoff to score so much would be one key (SG/M-C double teamed her in the play-offs).  The Burros have their SEC schedule including opening with Kingsland (home).  They take on SG/M-C on December 12 (away) and January 26 (home).  Non-conference, the Burros have the Decorah Border Battle (vs South Winn) and road games at NRHEG, Pine Island, L-A, FC, PEM, R-P, and St. Charles.  Home non-con games are with Decorah, W-K, R-P, Chatfield, AC/G-E and Hayfield/SA.

Chatfield will look to improve on last year’s season.  The Gophers went 7-8 in the TRC.  They fell to PEM 65-47 in a 1AA Round of 16 contest and finished the year 12-15.   Kyle Tollefson’s team had five total post-season honorees, with all-league honorable mention picks Kendall Knutson (5’8” F > 10.5 PPG, 5.8 RPG) and Kylin Schroeder (5’10” F > 6.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG) graduating.  Four full-time seniors moved on.  Chatfield returns its sole All-TRC selection in Amaya Harmening (5’10” F), the team’s top interior threat (11.0 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 49% FGs).  All-TRC HM picks Lexi Kivimagi (5’7” Jr G > 7.7 PPG, 3.1 RPG, team-best 3.4 APG) and Grace Schroeder (5’8” Sr. G > 12.0 PPG, 2.3 SPG) are also back to help the cause.  Schroeder led Chatfield in scoring last year.   Julia Goldsmith (5’10” Sr. F) is a fourth returnee to see full-time action.  Harmening, G-Schroeder and Goldsmith are the team’s three returning seniors.   Chatfield has its TRC schedule including opening at home with D-E.  They have two games over the holidays at the WSU Tourney.  Other road non-con games are with Z-M, Randolph/CF, Triton, Lanesboro, Southland and Pine Island.  Home non-con games are with Lake City, Lourdes and Kingsland.

The Fillmore Central Falcons were middle of the road last year.  FC went 6-8 in the TRC.  They fell to section champion Goodhue in the 1A quarters and finished an even 14-14.   The Falcons did not get an All-TRC selection, but they had two honorable mention picks.   Each return to headline this year’s cast.  Sophia Bronner (6’0” Sr. F/C) and Kyla Hellickson (5’9” Sr. G/F) are Levi Olstad’s top returnees.  Bronner led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding a season ago (8.2 PPG, 7.3 RPG).  Hellickson was the second leading scorer putting up versatile all-around numbers (8.1 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 2.0 APG, 2.4 SPG).   Fellow seniors Aubrey Daniels (5’5” G > 5.6 PPG, 2.6 APG, 1.9 SPG) and Cora Britton (6’0” F/C > 2.7 PPG, 2.6 RPG) also return, as does Hannah Vaalemoen (5’8” So. G > 3.5 PPG).   FC has back five of nine girls to play substantially a season ago.    Bronner, Hellickson, Daniels, Britton, and Maddie Topness (5’5” G) are the team’s returning five seniors.   FC has its TRC schedule including games with R-P on December 30 (away, holiday tourney) and January 23 (home).  Home non-conference games are with K-W (season-opener), Houston, Lanesboro, L-O and Hayfield/SA.  Away non-con games are with BP, GM, Minneapolis-Roosevelt (R-P Tourney), Southland, Kingsland, SG and Faribault B.A.

After a good run of basketball, Kingsland stepped back last year.  The Knights went 4-10 in the SEC.  They fell to Southland in the 1A Round of 16 and finished the year 5-18.   It was their first below-five-hundred season since 2014-2015.  Over that nine-year span between, Knight girls teams averaged 17 wins a year.  Kingsland had just one All-SEC player, 2nd team pick Chantle Reiland (5’6” G).  She was one of three seniors to move on.  Coach John Fenske returns five experienced seniors to try to improve upon last year.  Hailee Warren (5’10” Sr. F) made All-SEC HM a year ago.  Macy Runck (5’7” G), Jaelee Hagstrom (5’9” F), Lydia Redman (5’2” G), and Reese Guy (5’8” G) were also key assets last year.  Warren and Hagstrom have played a lot on varsity since sophomore year.  Jill Moore (5’4” Jr. F) is another notable returnee, as she played a bit as an underclassman last year. Numbers are down, as there are only 13 girls nine thru 12 (one freshman, three sophomores, four juniors, five seniors).  The Knights have their SEC schedule including at Grand Meadow on December 5, while hosting the Larks January 23.  They have the Decorah Border Battle (vs Crestwood), plus other road non-con games with AC/G-E (season opener), W-K, B-P, Chatfield and L-A.  Home non-con affairs are with Randolph/CF, K-W, Faribault B.A., St. Charles, W-K and FC.

LeRoy-Ostrander will look to grab a few more wins this year, the second under Coach Ryan Evans.  The Cardinals struggled to an 0-14 SEC campaign last year.  They lost to SG/M-C in the 1A quarters and finished 1-25.   L-O had just one senior, their leading scorer (13.9 PPG) and second leading rebounder (7.5 PPG), Benita Nolt (F/C).  A three-time All-SEC pick, Nolt finished with over 1,400 career points and 1,200 career rebounds.  But nine girls return who played in 20 or more games.  Miranda Nagel (5’9” Jr. F) is their top returning scorer (7.5 PPG) and rebounder (10.2 PPG).   Mabel Johnson (5’5” Jr. F > 6.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.5 SPG) is the team’s lone returning honored player, as she was All-SEC honorable mention.  Maria Almaraz-Nolt (5’8” Jr. F > 5.9 PPG, 5.2 RPG) and Kendall Olson (5’8” Sr. F > 2.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG), the team’s sole senior, are two more returning starters while Rylee Kleeberger (5’3” Jr. G), Kim Volkart (5’7” Jr. F), Victoria Knode (5’5” So. F), Ally Siskow (5’7” 8th F), and Tessa Lewison (5’0” Fr. G) all saw action in most games.   The Cardinals have their normal SEC schedule, starting with a home season-opener with Lanesboro.  Home non-con games are with AC/G-E, L-A, W-K and Mankato-Loyola.  Road non-con games are with K-W, R-P, St. Charles, La Crescent/Hokah, Hayfield/SA, FC, Riceville and Faribault B.A. plus the Decorah Border Battle (vs TBD).
