Girls Basketball: Falcons Top Trojans in Frenzied Overtime Game
In an excellent girls basketball contest, FC took on R-P at the Trojans’ 3-Coops Holiday hoops tourney. It took overtime and featured 172 total points. FC came out inspired and built a 31-17 lead. R-P narrowed the score to 39-36 only for the Falcons to score the final six points of the half for a 45-36 lead at the break. FC shot 17 of 31 (54%) for the stanza, R-P 10 of 30 (33%). In the latter part of the second half, R-P’s press slowly wore on FC resulting in a comeback. The Falcons led 65-52 with about eight minutes left. Down 67-58, the Trojans went on a 14-4 run. Alannah Skalet had a big three to get R-P within one at 71-70, and a trip down the court later, Torryn Schneider scored to give the Trojans their only their second lead at 72-71. But FC’s Norah Nagel then responded with a bucket in the lane, making it 73-72 (1:15). Trojan Ava Helgemoe came back and hit her only three of the game, putting R-P back ahead 75-73 (0:52). On FC’s end, after an offensive rebound, 6’0” center Sophia Bronner was fouled. The senior hit both free throws to tie the game 75-75 (0:37.9). The teams were then scoreless the rest of the way, R-P turning it over and missing a three. FC missed three shots including a heave in the final seconds. The game went to overtime tied 75-75! But in a contest that featured 65 total foul shots, the war of foul attrition took effect. R-P lost three starters to foul out, Nadia Happel, Kaia Loney, and A-Helgemoe. FC lost two, Kyla Hellickson and Hannah Vaalemoen. In the extra session, R-P led 79-76 before Hellickson (pre-foul out) converted a three-point play to tie it 79-79. With 2:10 left, Falcon senior Maddie Topness hit a huge three to put FC back ahead. Topness was three-of-three from deep. The edge grew to 85-79 (0:40.2), but the Trojans kept fighting, getting two Schneider free throws, then a Skalet bucket to make it 85-83 (0:14.5). R-P fouled. The Falcons missed both free throws, but with her post counterpart Loney on the bench, Bronner snared the offensive rebound and put back the miss, a massive play to make it 87-83. Schneider subsequently hit a couple free throws (0:2.1), but FC got the ensuing inbounds in. The Falcons held on a for a key 87-85 overtime win. Hellickson (21 pts, 8-12 FGs, 4-5 FTs, 9 rebs, 7 asts) and Bronner (21 pts, 5-9 FTs, 15 rebs) did the biggest work for FC. Nagel (11 pts, 11 rebs, 3 asts), Aubrey Daniels (10 pts, 5 asts), Topness (9 pts, 3-3 threes), and Vaalemoen (9 pts) helped. Skalet (18 pts, 4-7 threes), Happel (17 pts), Loney (16 pts, 8-10 FGs), Emily Helgemoe (15 pts), and Schneider (12 pts, 10-10 FTs, 7 rebs) gave R-P five girls in double figures. FC finished the game 18 of 29 at the line (62%). R-P was 25 of 36 (69%). FC has 22 turnovers to R-P’s 11 but made 31 of 68 shots (46%) to R-Ps 26 of 67 (39%). The Trojans were 8 of 32 from deep (25%), FC 7 of 17 (41%). FC improved to 2-2 in the TRC, 6-2 overall.

The Vikings annulled a 29-26 deficit by outscoring the Lions 43-22 in the second half. Faribault B.A. 51, Kingsland 46 in OT (K: Macy Runck 19 pts; Hailee Warren/Reese Guy 8 pts. Kingsland led 23-18 at the half. A Cardinal free throw tied the game 39-39 with 3:11 and both teams were then scoreless the rest of regulation. Both teams had a turnover their last possession. Kingsland led 46-45 in overtime but a B.A. three-point play put the Cards ahead 48-46 with under a minute left. Kingsland missed a game-tying three in the final 10-seconds. The Falcons scored the final six points of the game to win OT 12-5. The Knights are 2-3 in the SEC, 2-9 overall)
