Fred A. Lorius, age 91, of Spring Valley, Minn., died Saturday, March 21, 2026, at home, surrounded by family.
Fred was born November 8, 1934, in Spring Valley to Anton and Anna (Westphal) Lorius. Fred attended Spring Valley High School and entered the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from the Army Fred attended Dunwoody Institute for two years and became an Electrician. He worked as a Master Electrician in Minnesota and Alaska for many years until his retirement in 1996.
He was united in marriage to Evelyn Nielsen on the 24th of November 1960 in Minneapolis. They were together for 65 years at the time of his passing. Fred found joy in the simple and meaningful things he loved most – whether it was heading out for a hunting or fishing trip, tending to his flowers in the greenhouse and vegetable gardens outdoors, or preserving the harvest through canning. He enjoyed building things with his own hands. Fred also enjoyed golfing, traveling, and exploring new places. He treasured memories at the cabin in Alaska that he helped build from the logs off the land. Cooking was something he always enjoyed, especially for Sunday suppers, which gathered the whole family together, creating memories that lasted far beyond the moment. He was a life member of the Spring Valley VFW.
Fred is survived by his wife Evelyn of Spring Valley, his children Paul of Ostrander, Minn., Teresa (Brad) Bly of Spring Valley, Minn., and John (Angie Erickson) of Spring Valley, Minn.; seven grandchildren; Lindsay Arnold, Hannah Lorius, Casey Ptacek, Nikki Smith, Matt Bly, Gabe Bly, and Taylor Johnson; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters: Viola, Mary, Ruth, Jane and Darlene; and two brothers in infancy.
Services are planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spring Valley. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, Minn. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
