In a South-East sub-district rivalry game, in a nutshell, Lanesboro is big, Mabel-Canton is smaller. That size helped the Burros to a win and eclipse last year’s victory total. The Cougars got enough big plays to stay in the game most of the way. Lanesboro never trailed, leading 8-0, 8-6, 14-6, 14-12, 22-12, and 22-18 at the half, as the teams exchanged scores. A pair of two-point conversions were the difference. The teams exchanged scores in the third quarter as well, Burros getting 3-yard Charles Guma TD-run to go ahead 28-18. M-C answered late in the stanza, as Nolan Garness hit Josh Whitney on a 64-yard TD strike, leaving the score 28-24 Burros heading to the fourth. But early in the stanza, Teague Tessum hit sophomore Teagan Reinhardt on a 51-yard TD reception. It was the Burros’ longest pass play, only passing score, and only completion of the second half. It was also redemption for the Reinhardt, who dropped a key reception prior. His catch put the home team up 36-24. James Semmen’s group then got a stop, and iced the game via Tessum 4-yard TD run making the score 44-24 with 5:19 left. The Burros prevailed 44-30. Lanesboro’s main man was 6’3” 230-pound junior Henry Semmen. He toted 16 times for 190 yards and two TDs, had two conversion runs, caught a 12-yard pass, had five tackles for loss including two sacks. Linemen James Cullen, Carson Nagel, and Jackson Hearon plus TE Liam Miller were big in helping the Burros bully the smaller Cougars to the tone of 399 rushing yards. Tessum (4 of 8, 81 yards, TD, conversion passing; 13-77, 2 TDs rushing) and Guma (10-79, TD rushing) also did big work. Reinhardt (2-56, TD receiving, conversion rushing) added a 57-yard kickoff return that set up a Burro score in the first half. Kale Eiken (18-118, 2 TDs rushing; 3-82, TD receiving) and Josh Whitney (3-89, 2 TDs receiving) did big work for M-C alongside QB Garness (7 of 15, 212 yards, 3 TDs passing). Eiken had a 67-yard TD run and a 59-yard TD reception in the first half. Carter Hershberger also had a 41-yard reception. M-C was held to five yards rushing in the second half. They had 140 yards rushing total. Lanesboro improved to 2-1 in the South-East and overall. They are in third place with GM (2-1) and Spring Grove (2-1). The Burros were 1-8 last year. M-C dropped to 1-2 in the South-East and overall.
