Football: Lions Hold Off Knights

October 12, 2026 by Paul Trende Leave a Comment

A pack of Lions, which looks to be #15 Caden Gerard (left), #22 Sam Klug, #59 Blake Eiken, and #2 Dylan Halverson are all around to corral Kingsland QB Collin Stuart. The South-East second place Lions moved to 4-1 on the year with a 41-20 over the Knights.

Spring Grove and Kingsland engaged in a back-and-forth battle before the Lions emerged with a 41-20 Homecoming victory. Spring Grove never trailed, managing to stay ahead of the Knights as the teams traded touchdowns, especially during a 35-point second quarter. SG quarterback Dylan Halverson (5 of 10, 68 yards, interception passing) threw two TD passes for 30 and 5 yards, both to Sam Klug. Halverson also caught one pass, an interception. On foot, Halverson (18 carries, 180 yards) later clinched the decision with two TD runs of 34 and 11 yards. The first two Lion TDs were scored by Caden Gerard on 9- and 2-yard carries. Kingsland answered that first TD but was denied the lead as a Gerard tackle stopped a two-point conversion attempt, preserving a 7-6 Lion lead. After Spring Grove went ahead 21-6, the Knights never caught up. They twice got back within a touchdown at 21-14 and 28-20. But the Lions clinched the decision by scoring back-to-back TDs for the second time. The league’s third leading rusher and fourth leading scorer, Bently Wiersma scored all 20 Kingsland points. He did score a 6-yard rushing TD and a rushing 2-point conversion but limited to 33 yards on 18 carries, Wiersma had little room to run until catching three passes for 46 yards, including two TD receptions for 15 and 33 yards, the latter the Knights’ longest gain of the game. Collin Stuart (8 of 16) passed for 86 yards and two TDs plus an interception. SG only out-gained the visitors, 284 to 229. Both teams had one turnover and punted twice, but the Lions stopped KHS on downs three times. Converting both fourth-down attempts, SG scored three more touchdowns. The Knights were also penalized for over 100 yards. The Lions improved to 4-1; the Knights slipped to 2-3.
