Houston football was 1-8 last year. We are through week two this season and Cody Hungerholt’s Hurricanes are already 3-0. Team double-H was not just able to beat week two foe Mabel-Canton (which won seven games and hammered Houston 59-6 last year). It was a blowout. Houston’s defense gave up 261 yards and six rushing TDs a year ago. This year’s game saw the ‘Cane defense blank M-C through three quarters. They surrendered just 128 yards rushing on 38 carries (3.4 YPC) and held M-C to 1 of 11 on third down. On offense, Houston scored on six of its first eight drives, ripping off three first quarter touchdowns and conversions for a 24-0 lead. By halftime, it was 38-0. The lead grew to 46-0 before M-C finally got on the board late for a 46-6 final. On the ground, the duo of Maddox Rodriguez (14-84, 2 TDs rushing) and Aden Kulas (15-79, TD rushing) carried the load. Through the air, Morgan Rohweder harkened back to 2021, when he threw three TDs versus the Cougars in a 28-14 win. The junior again threw three TDs (8 of 12, 199 yards, INT passing). Zach Olson (4-107, TD receiving) was his top target. Rodriguez added TD receptions of 20 and 2 yards. Axel Vix (40 yards) and Landyn VanGundy (30 yards) added long snares. Houston put up 422 yards of offense (223 rushing, 199 passing) while holding M-C to 188. Kale Tollefsrud (4-51, TD rushing) was the Cougars’ leading rusher. The All-District duo of Cayden Tollefsrud (13-34 rushing, 3-53 receiving) and Tyler Larson (9-30 rushing) were held in check on the ground, though Tollefsrud had 87 total yards offense. M-C completed just 4 of 12 passes for 60 yards. Houston had two interceptions, both by Zach Olson. Houston, ranked #10, improved to 2-0 in the South-East, 3-0 overall. M-C fell to 0-2, 0-2.
