Football: Extra Points Propel Houston Past #2 Spring Grove

Each team scored three touchdowns. Houston converted all three extra-point plays; #2 in 9-Man Spring Grove converted none. With a 24-18 win, the Hurricanes ended a 20-game losing streak versus the Lions. It was a yellow-flag-fest and shared frustration with the teams combining for seven turnovers, 16 fumbles and 24 penalties (12 apiece). Each team had one turnover via interception while the Lions lost two fumbles and the Hurricanes three. Houston was penalized for 96 yards. The Lions won the turnover battle, 4 to 3, but finished with 130 penalty yards, their most penalties and yards in seven years. Houston scored the first 16 points with two 81-yard drives and later led 24-6 until Grove scored in the final minute of the first half to make it 24-12. The Lions then held the Hurricanes scoreless during the second half but did not score themselves until 2:37 remained. Hurricane Tilden Witt then made a leaping grab of the onside kickoff. The ‘Canes, despite only two plays covering more than 20 yards, outgained the Lions overall, 290 yards to 246. The Hurricanes, with five sacks, limited SG to a measly 10 yards rushing. The ‘Canes rushed for 250 yards and all three TDs. Lee Klunder (20-116 rushing) scored on an 11-yard carry, Elliot Frauenkron (14-72 rushing) on a 13-yard run. Axel Vix (5-40 receiving) scored with a 16-yard pass. Hector Steinfeldt passed only nine times, completing 5 for 40 yards, all to Vix. Klunder ran in a pair of extra points, Vix ran for the other PAT. With rushing frustration and trailing all evening, the Lions relied on an aerial attack with 33 pass attempts, their most in five years. Dylan Halverson, sacked five times and intercepted once by Klunder, still completed 13 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns, both to Caden Gerard (6-114 receiving) on 42 and 17-yard pass plays. A 57-yard completion to Devon Williams and a 30-yard toss to Gerard set up a two-yard TD carry by Jacob Solum. Gerard also caught a Houston pass, his fourth interception of the season. Lion WR/LB Ricardo Reynolds was a field-position factor in the kicking game, averaging 41 yards on four punts, including one for 55 yards down to the Hurricane one yard-line. He also ran back a kickoff 62 yards. Both teams left with 2-1 records, tied with AC/G-E and L-O/L/P for third place behind undefeated Kingsland and Mabel-Canton (each 3-0, 3-0).

Football: Cougars Surge Late to Blast Past Burros

With the first drive of the second half, Lanesboro (0-2, 0-2) marched 62 yards in 12 plays. Mason Gilbertson’s 1-yard TD run gave the Burros their first lead of the game at 26-22 with 6:17 left in the third quarter. But Mabel-Canton (2-0, 2-0) scored the final 28 points of the contest to douse any Burro upset hopes and post a South-East sub-district week three win. The first half was back-and-forth. The Cougars jumped out 14-0 in the first quarter, but scored just once in the second quarter while the Burros did so thrice. Freshman Teague Tessum’s beautiful fake-handoff QB-run for a 29-yard TD, put Lanesboro on the board. M-C then fumbled. The Burros slowly went 36 yard in nine plays, as Gilbertson scored his first TD, tying the game 14-14. With its next offensive play, M-C responded with a 57-yard Isaac Underbakke TD-pass to the elusive Kale Tollefsrud, as M-C went ahead 22-14. But the Burros had some good fortune with their next drive. Amidst a scrum, M-C ripped out a fumble, but the ball ended up in Burro David Harvey’s hands and he scampered 57 yards to paydirt with 0:35.9 left in the first half. The conversion failed, leaving the score 22-20 M-C at intermission. Lanesboro then took its only lead to start the second half. The Cougar offense was then not stopped. Paul Tollefsrud’s group scored on its next four possessions. It took them just two plays to retake the lead, as Kale T. scamped 49 yards to make it 28-26 M-C. After a Burro punt, the senior scored his fifth TD of the game on a five-yard run to cap a six-play, 47-yard drive. Following a recovered squib kick, Kale Eiken scored on a 34-yard run. Eiken then capped the scoring with a 2-yard plunge. M-C stayed perfect via a 50-26 win. K-Tollefsrud (14-132, 3 TDs rushing; 3-105, 2 TDs receiving) went over 100 rushing and receiving. He also recovered the second half squib kick turnover. Eiken (12-128, 2 TDs rushing) also topped 100 on the ground. Isaac Underbakke (4 of 6, 122 yards, 2 TDs passing; 5-44 rushing) helped, as M-C had 476 yards total offense including 354 on the ground. A busy Harvey (27-126, TD rushing) churned out a lot of short gains to lead the Burros while Tessum (6 of 8, 39 yards passing; 5-41, TD rushing) and an injury-limited Gilbertson (3-yard TD run, 1-yard TD run) also found paydirt. The Burros had 191 yards rushing and 39 passing. M-C (3-0, 3-0) and Kingsland (3-0, 3-0) are the only two South-East teams left without a loss. The Knights beat AC/G-E (2-1, 2-1) while Houston (2-1, 2-1) topped Spring Grove (2-1, 2-1). The Burros are 0-3, 0-3
