Fast breaks, free throws propel Spring Grove girls past Schaeffer

February 2, 2023 by Lee Epps

Spring Grove Lions Girls Basketball

Five early fast breaks provided the Spring Grove girls a lead they would not relinquish, and they held off Schaeffer Academy, 58-54, on Jan. 26 at Rochester. Freshman Siri Konkel piloted the attack with a career-high 24 points plus 6 assists. The Grove girls had only 9 turnovers, a season-best, as the third place Spring Grove Lions (7-10, 5-7 SEC) completed a season sweep of the fourth place Schaeffer Lions (5-11, 3-7 SEC). Grove had won 60-45 at home back in early December.

Getting to the free throw line paid dividends for Spring Grove with Konkel hitting 11 straight charity tosses (11 for 12), all in the second half. Both teams went 4 for 19 with 3-point attempts (21%). Each team had 49 official 2-point attempts with Schaeffer going 16 for 49 and Spring Grove 15 for 49. Schaeffer had a two-point edge from the field, but Grove hit six more free throws (16 for 21, 76%) than did the home team (10 for 16, 63%).

In addition to Konkel’s 24 points, Kylie Hammel put in 9 points with 8 each from Brinley Middendorf and Lydia Solum. Middendorf and Hammel each rebounded 8 times while Solum collected 6 caroms. Grove secured a season-high 40 rebounds, but Schaeffer won the backboard battle with 46.

Spring Grove raced out of the gate to convert early defensive rebounds into 11 transition points, scoring on five fast breaks while taking a 13-3 lead. After a 2-2 tie score, Schaeffer never caught up again but remained close most of the way. Spring Grove led 30-28 at halftime and led by as many as 12 points (46-34) before Schaeffer hit back-to-back 3-balls to get back within three at 52-49 with 1:20 to play. Spring Grove stayed ahead by netting 6 of 8 late free throws.

Spring Grove has now won the last nine games in the series it leads, 25-1. The Spring Grove B-team (7-8) also completed a season sweep with a 48-14 win as did the seventh graders, 30-8.
