January 10, 2022 by Paul Trende

Fillmore Central’s basketball teams hosted Kingsland’s over the holidays.  The girls took the court first.  Offense was still at the Christmas dinner table.  It was all defense.  The teams combined for over 100 rebounds (37 offensive).  FC shot 12 of 63 from the field (19%), Kingsland 10 of 59 (17%).  There were 53 combined foul shots.  It took about eight minutes for FC to get its first field goal.  It took five-plus minutes for Kingsland to get its first second-half field goal.  The Knights narrowly led 17-14 at halftime.  FC scored 14 of the first 16 second half points.  The Falcons built a 28-19 lead.  Kingsland rallied with an 11-2 run to pull even at 30-30.  But Falcon junior Courtney Hershberger hit two key threes in the final five minutes, the last putting FC up 39-30.  They prevailed 45-31.  Kingsland had one point the final five minutes.  Kammry Broadwater (8 pts, 17 rebs, 3 asts, 3 stls), Hershberger (8 pts, 4 rebs), Abby Bothun (7 pts, 8 rebs), and Madison Simon (7 pts, 5 rebs) led the way, albeit shooting a combined 8 for 43 (19%).  Simon hit two free throws to put FC ahead for good at 32-30.  Knight senior Alexys Harwood (14 pts, 8 rebs) led all scorers.  Kaitlyn Hauser (8 pts, 4 stls) scored her points in the first half.  Emily Miner added 6 (pts) and 8 (rebs).  The rest of the team went 0-for-27 shooting.  Standout guard Anika Reiland was in foul trouble most of the game.  FC was plus-nine at the free throw line (17 of 34 to Kingsland’s 8 of 19).   The Falcons (0-4, 1-7) picked up their first win.  Kingsland dropped to 5-0, 8-4.  The boys then took the court.  FC used an early 11-0 run to take the lead 16-7.  The Knights pulled within one later in the first half (20-19) only for another 9-0 Falcon run.  FC led 31-22 at the half.  The Falcons led by double-digits most of the second half.  FC prevailed 65-58.  Sophomores Jayce Kiehne (20 pts, 6-9 FTs, 6 rebs) and Luke Hellickson (15 pts, 3-8 threes, 4-4 FTs, 8 rebs, 3 asts) led the way.  Jake Fishbaugher (10 pts, 7 rebs) and Bryce Corson (7 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts) helped.  Sophomore Jayden Brink hit six threes (five in the second half) to lead Kingsland (20 pts, 6-13 threes, 5 stls).  Walker Erdman (14 pts, 3-7 threes, 7 rebs) also hit double-digits.  Garrison Hubka (5 pts, 5 rebs) and Kaden Rath (2 pts, 7 rebs, 6 asts) helped.  Nine Knights scored.  FC was plus-13 at the free throw line (16 of 27 to 3 of 11).  Kingsland hit 12 of 30 threes (40%), FC 7 of 23 (30%).  The Falcons (0-3, 2-5) ended a five-game losing streak.  Kingsland fell to 1-2, 2-4.
