Erma M. Werth of Spring Valley, Minn., died on her 98th birthday, November 19, 2019, at Spring Valley Senior Living.
Erma May Schmidt was born November 19, 1921, to Adolph and Caroline (Schultz) Schmidt in Avon, S. Dak. Her family moved from South Dakota to Spring Valley and after she graduated high school, she joined them in Spring Valley. She married Amil Werth one minute after midnight on October 12, 1941, at the First Baptist Church Parsonage. After marriage, Amil joined the Navy. Following his discharge, they lived in rural Spring Valley. Erma did gardening, canning, and butchering out of necessity. She was famous for her homemade bread and black cap jam. She enjoyed reading in her spare time. Erma was a member of First Baptist Church in Spring Valley. She was very active in Sunday school, was an AWANA leader, and sent out church information to the homebound and sick.
Erma is survived by her children Curly (Joyce) Werth of Spring Valley, Doris (Roger) Cooper of Maryville, Mo., Vernon (Linda) Werth of Rogers, Minn., and Marvin (Judy) Werth of Edina, Minn.; eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and five-and-one-half great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Amil, two great-grandchildren, four sisters, and four brothers.
Funeral services for Erma will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at First Baptist Church in Spring Valley, with Reverend Joe Haynes officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, November 22 at Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley and will continue for one hour at the church prior to the service on Saturday.
