The Spring Grove girls, one night after almost upsetting East Division leader Lanesboro on the road, was never in contention when West Division leader Kingsland visited the Lions’ den on Jan. 20. The Lions had no solution for the visitors’ quick defense as the Knights prevailed, 52-30. The Grove girls (6-9, 4-7) went over seven minutes before scoring their first points, and then went scoreless for the first five and half minutes of the second half. Kingsland (12-4, 9-0 SEC) remained unbeaten in league play, including an earlier 70-51 win over the Lions in Spring Valley.

Spring Grove outscored the visitors, 17-16, in the second half, but the Knights had already seized complete control with a 36-13 first-half avalanche. Half of the Lions’ points came from freshman Kylie Hammel with a game-high 15 points and a team-high 6 rebounds. Nine Knights scored, but none reached double figures. All-Conference guard Anika Reiland was a force with 7 points, 14 rebounds and 5 steals.
Neither team had much success from 3-point range, but Kingsland blitzed the Lions with 20 fast break points and threw in 21 points from the perimeter. Both teams aired up almost the same number of shots, but the Knights outshot the home team, 37% to 26% from the field and 63% to 7% from the foul line. Spring Grove hit only one of 14 free throws while Kingsland went 10 for 16.
The girls from Spring Valley have won nine straight against the girls from Spring Grove and lead the young series, 10 wins to 3. The Lion B-team (5-8) competed a season sweep with an exciting 43-36 decision. Kingsland won a competitive seventh grade game, 14-11
