Doris Irene McCabe

Doris Irene McCabe, 83, of Lanesboro, Minn., passed away surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, December 4, 2024, at Saint Marys Hospital.  She leaves behind her loving husband Darrell and their five children: Debbie, Diann, Douglas, Denise and Dustin. 

Doris was born in Spring Grove, Minn., on August 7, 1941, to Thor Olaf and Irene Vinetta (Bryant) Fossum.  She was the youngest of 10 children. She lived in Spring Grove, La Cresent, Harmony and Preston, attending Vail Country School, Harmony Elementary School, and graduating from Preston High School in 1959. 

She met Darrell McCabe at the Harmony Roller Rink and married him on November 3, 1962.  They lived in the Lanesboro area, and purchased their farms in 1973, where they raised their five children. Doris devoted her life raising her children, watching them grow and succeed.  Years later, she took pride and joy caring for her granddaughters.  Playing cards, dice games, chatting on the phone with friends, and attending the grandchildren’s sporting events were some of her favorite pastimes. She was a dancing queen in her era and could really kick up her heels!  Her puppy Molly was a constant and treasured companion.

Doris and Darrell renewed their vows at 25 years of marriage at the Henrytown Church and again at 50 years of marriage, with the family in Mexico.  She was an incredible wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister, aunt and friend.  Her greatest joy in life was spending time with family.

She was an active member of Henrytown Lutheran Church, where she served as vice president.  She assisted with Amherst Township elections, and served as a Sunday School teacher.  Doris was employed throughout the years at Preston Packaging Plant, Avon, and Camera Art.  Doris worked hard on the farm raising a garden, mowing the lawn, baling hay, and driving tractor alongside Darrell.  They had the opportunity to travel many places such as Nashville, Hawaii, Branson, Arizona, California, South Dakota, New Orleans, Texas, New Mexico, Kentucky, Jamaica, Bahamas, Mexico and Monaco.

Doris is survived by her husband Darrell McCabe, children Debbie Majerus, Diann McCabe (John Berry), Douglas McCabe, Denise (Jason) Slavin, and Dustin (Emily) McCabe; grandchildren Brittney (Brandon) Peterson, Caitlin (Tony) Russell, Ellie McCabe, Addison McCabe, Natalie McCabe, Shaya Slavin and Sophie Slavin; and great-grandchildren Braelyn and Gracyn Peterson, and Ava and Liam Russell.

She was preceded in death by her parents Thor and Irene Fossum, siblings Donald Fossum, Dorothy Soland, Ardell Fossum, Robert Fossum, Curtis Fossum, Janice Soland, Arden Fossum, Glenn Fossum and Richard Fossum; and granddaughter Nikki Majerus.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 9 at the Henrytown Lutheran Church in rural Canton.  Burial will be in the church cemetery immediately following the service.  Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday, December 8 at the Henrytown Church and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.  The Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is assisting with arrangements.
