Defense, dribble drives provide victory over L/P for Grove girls

January 6, 2023 by Lee Epps

Spring Grove Lions Girls Basketball

The Spring Grove girls overcame a sluggish start and frosty free throw shooting with defense and productive dribble drives on offense to get past Lyle/Pacelli, 58-45. The Lions (4-5, 2-3 SEC) boarded the bus for Austin on Jan. 2 – a day and half early to avoid an impending winter storm.

Lyle/Pacelli scored the first 10 points of the game, and then the Lions tallied the next 18. The winless Athletics (0-8, 0-6 SEC) did not appear winless while nailing their first five shots for a that quick 10-0 advantage. Spring Grove coach Taylor Elton called timeout and by changing the Lion defense, also changed the character of the contest.

Lyle/Pacelli, after hitting those opening five shots, went 20 possessions before scoring again (8 turnovers, 0 for 13 shooting). The Lions, who had missed their first six shots, hit 10 of their next 16.

Siri Konkel and Emerson Ingvalson each tossed in 14 points while Addyson McHugh added 10 points and 5 steals. Kylie Hammel contributed 9 points and 9 rebounds. Lydia Solum grabbed 7 rebounds and Brinley Middendorf 6. Not all the Lions were able to make the quickly rescheduled contest, including starting post Kendal VanMinsel.

Although Konkel netted 3 of 5 shots beyond the 3-point arc, neither team shot well from afar overall (SG 3 for 16 and L/P 2 for 18). The Lions were successful in getting to the free throw line, but did not perform well from the stripe, 9 for 23 (39%). But the Grove girls, with 10 fewer turnovers than L/P, efficiently took the ball inside with the dribble for 26 points. The Lions won by 13 points after outscoring the home team by 12 points in the paint (39-27).

Often frustrated by the Spring Grove defense, the Athletics committed 24 turnovers, too often settled for quick 3-point shots and too rarely got to the foul line (7 for 11).

This was the Lions’ third straight win over the Athletics, who had taken the previous 10. This 58-45 score came just after a very similar 58-43 score over West Lutheran. Spring Grove shot 36% in both games.
